Background
Some history, I've been around here on BHW for a while. About 4 years ago I was struggling for cash and made about 800 USD in 1 month from stuff I learned here. That was fantastic but the success was short lived. Got a penalty iirc and also got an email from a corporation in the USA saying they were going to take my domain. Long story short I was working a pretty straight job for a while but now I'm back around. I am super glad to find a thriving community still exists here.
Project Overview
Made a website where, if done right. Users will go on there for anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes. If they use the 'app' a fair amount of them come back. The thing about this type of site is I need a critical mass of users for the thing to really be useful and start taking off.
The keywords are all medium difficulty for this niche. There are about 4 to 5 major players but nothing run by huge companies with lots of resources. For me, this was about building something and trying to bootstrap it. Practicing my business and marketing skills on a small scale. It would be nice to see some income from it but I don't expect to live off it. Having said that, I don't want to rule anything out either.
I built the app which is a single page and I have a few supporting pages and a blog news section. I've also had a separate blog about the project that's been going for a few months. The domain itself is about 6 months old and the app was 'launched' about 45 days ago.
I have no advertising on the site, so I'm only spending money on it at this point. The site itself is running for 10 USD a month in AWS. I'll need to increase that if I get lots more users but for now that's manageable. I am hoping to get steady stream of users before putting adds on it. I think I need at least 1000 users a day for this thing to work.
Getting Users From Serps
I've done very small amount of social media stuff, it's not really my thing. I'd rather focus on link building and getting lots of traffic by being #1.
It's no easy task though. I have mad some minor successes on my own and more recently started using some services here. Those things would just now be starting to get indexed though so my guess is they won't show up yet. Bellow are 3 keyword phrases and my progress. There are a ton of different phrases for this niche and every link seems to improve my ranking overall. These are just three I'm focusing on for now.
KW Phrase 1 - 4 words
This was the first keyword I decided to target. Internal links pointing to the homepage use this phrase. I'm at position 10 and sometimes see myself bounce up to 5.
KW Phrase 2 - 2 words
I saw a bunch of clicks even though I was way down in the results (30 +) so I started targeting this one. I'm around 20 now.
KW Phrase 3 - 3 words
Just decided to start going after this.
Overall Serp Traffic
So, I had about 900 visitors from search in the last 30 days and my goal is 1000 visitors a day. Still have a long way to go. I've got lots of links that should be hitting on multiple tiers of sites in the next few weeks. Hopefully that will make a huge difference and I'll report back with some good results.
Questions for BHW
Does this seem like a reasonable venture? Do I seem nuts to anyone? Because sometimes I wonder.
