Hey dudes,

I'm in the process of giving 7878's ORM method a try. So far I have sent out 100 letters and have 65 finished letters ready to send out soon, but I wont send those out until I have 100 ready to send.

The results so far:
So far out of the 100 letters that I have sent out, I have received 3 responses. Two of them called and were keen enough to leave a voicemail. And another send me a fairly lengthy email.

The first guy who called already was (sort of) doing his own reputation management. He had a section on his website asking for reviews, and promised a free meal out of a raffle out of all that leave reviews. Which is a pretty good idea to give him credit. What he was missing was the "review funnel" to filter out the bad reviews. He said he'd give his way a go first then get in touch with me after 3 weeks.

I called the 2nd guy I called back today and made a sale! He agreed to go ahead for 6 months to see how it goes. I let him do most of the talking and then just told him how I would fix it and how much it was. He agreed to $397 a month for six months, I know I could have gotten more.. But this was my first sale and I wanted an easy one. I also wanted to make back the money I've spent on this which is around $400 (paper, pens, confidential stamp, printer, scrapers). The confidential stamp was $20!!! But I think it was a worthwhile investment.

My process:

  • Scrape businesses with bad reviews, then filter the list to find the worst reviewed businesses on (1 - 2.9 average score) with at least two bad reviews and are also advertising on Google.
  • Make folders for each lead, make their letter, take screenshots and print
  • Write on letters, write on envelopes & stamp. In my previous mailing I used dice in with the letters. This next one I'm about to send has bells :p Some of them also have nothing inside. I'm going to do more testing in the future to see my success rate without anything inside.
  • Wait a week or two and call all of them.

I'll post updates as they happen and I'm happy to answer questions and of course, please share your own experiences and ideas :)

Congrats on your success....
Now the third person that sent you the email what happened to that? Was it a nasty email ?

I sent them an email back, but I haven't received a reply. I'm going to call them when I call all of the others up from the first mailing, which should be tomorrow :)

I haven't had any angry prospects yet thankfully.

A little update:
I got another call today from my first mailing. Looks like my letters are still sitting on a few desks!

He said he's going to talk with his business associate and get back to me. :nemoflow:

Good to see another update! Keep the mailers going out!

I have another voicemail on my phone, so far that's a 5% response rate!

I finished another 23 or so letters last night. I'm going to another state for a week in two weeks, so I think that I'm going to wait until I come back to send out my next batch of letters.

Good luck. We sent 22 letters friday and got a call first thing Monday morning!

Awesome! Why did you send out on Friday? Seems that early in the week would be better rather than in a big stack of mail on Monday morning.

what do you use to scrape businesses with bad reviews? How do you collect payment? Do you sign a contract with them?

I use my own scraper that a friend and I have developed. I collect payments with freshbooks and I don't like contracts, so I don't use them, having them on autobill with a credit card or paypal is contract enough for me. :)

Don't mind the dumb question but do most people use scrapers?
I've been doing this manually and it really does take forever. I was thinking of building my own with a python script but figured it would get flagged by google or against the T&C.
Any advice/tips on this? how did you develop yours?

Cheers!

I don't think that many people are using scrapers, but I'm sure a few are. You need to use proxies to avoid Googles nasty ban hammer :)

A bit of an update:
I just called the guy who was going to "speak to his associate" and he said that because I can't remove the negative reviews he's not interested. His loss I guess.

Any chance you can shine some light on where I can get one of those handy scrapers? :D haha
