My new hosting doesnt have backup option in cpanel/'plesk' how could I do it manually?

I looked up and plesk does have backup capabilities but I mailed them and they said they don't use it cos it isnt reliable- so instead they just go with nothing :(.

They said they backup daily and I can ask for backups when I like.

Since I got hacked over xmas I've got into the habit of making a backup after I change anything to any of my sites so I'd prefer be able to do it myself.

How could I do it myself manually? -I want to do the equivalent of what a cpanel backup would be.

Not sure about plesk but it would be up to the host to install such software on the server.

One option of course is to FTP everything every few days.. Pain
In the ass but at least it's backup.

Its irritating cos i looked aorund and hostgator fucking sucks with support.

These guys seemed good for uk unlimited hosting otherwise but now they spring this crap on me.

Any other suggestions for good uk unlimited hosting welcome.

I gotta have good support which hostpapa sucked with I repeat -spent all day waiting for activaiton and then send support tickets and nothing.
 
Hmm I just isntalled backup buddy but it only seems like a site only backup (like any free plugin could do) rather than all.

I read on the site it can to multiple site but I dont see that option....

Im building micro niche sites daily so gotta have one click backups yo!
 
Most unlimited hosting plans suck because the hosts stack huge amounts of sites on them and they end up overloaded and slow. The last shared host I used had around 4000 sites on the same server. Google are known to use loading times as a ranking factor, so I got myself a cheap VPS and host my own sites. I don't use cpanel because it costs and there are free control panels available such as kloxo and virtualmin.

I have had a few different UK based VPS and some have been better than others.

What is your budget and how many sites and total bandwidth are you using? I might be able to give you a recommendation.
 
Budget isnt too much of an option as Im looking to get a good stable one that will last.

Im not bothered about unlimited space either its just that I am doing microniche sites so want unlimited domains and prob a cpl of gigs would do, maybe even one gig for multiple wordpress installs.

My current ones are great but at 11 pounds a month for unlimited domains seem alot more expensive than the others. I currently am on one of their lower deals which has maxed out its skrimpy 2 addon domains hence the looking around for other deals.

Now you mention the speed of unlimited I have noticed this new one seems quite a bit slower than my old one which is lightening fast- fastest ive ever had- and their support is awesome- so maybe its worth paying the extra for them unless anyone else has better suggestions.

Just checked bandwidth and it says 558mb/5k for the month.

If 11 month sounds worth it for a good service then let me know as I trust these ones and know I'd get a good service so would be easier to just go with these.

They have another which is 6 per month and 15 domains which would probably do me for a good while yet.

What do you mean it does not back up??

Mine does.
 
Regardless of their backup (or not backup), you should make your backup over ftp directly in your computer for every site at least once a week, just in case. Database export too.

I havent done it manually before...is it just a case of dragging and dropping the root? I think I tried that earlier and it wouldnt let me. So what folders shoudl I do? just public html or its equivalent? will dbs also be in there?

Plesk itself looks like it has backup capabilities just fine from what I saw in tutorials just these particular hosts told me they took it out cos it 'wasn't reliable at all'.

Less reliable than no backups at all! :(

Well they do have backups but don't allow access to them from the users end, they said you have to ask them. Pain in the ass if I am wanting one every day.

Generally public_html is the root folder and you'd have a subfolder per domain and that would just be the files such as wordpress and themes, but not the databases. These might be in another folder outside of public_html, depending on who you are with and how it's setup.

As for cost, I think that kind of expensive. I use VPSes that I administer myself for my sites and I pay under a tenner for a VPS with lots of RAM (so I can run lots of Apache instances = responsive and fast), more disk space than I'm ever likely to use with websites and around 1000 GB of transfer a month. I can also add absolutely unlimited domains and mailboxes and since I have full root access, I can do things like setup cron scripts to take database backups daily and email them to myself. The downside obviously is initial setup time and needing some system administration skills, but I do that anyway.

Are you targetting UK traffic specifically? I find that I can get equally specced US based VPSes for less than UK ones, although they can still be had pretty cheap.
 
they should have at least have an option to archive your files. ONce that's done, just ftp into your hosting and download the zip file.

That is not true. Maybe you misunderstood.

I back up mine and can download it almost immediately.

What isnt true? Its true that my specific hosting doesnt have db backups which is why i amde the post in the first place :D

Yes to other guy, I am targeting UK specifically hence why i want uk hosting.

I was writing a few posts today and its going to be a pain to have to backup both the db and ftp after every post.

I might jump ship yet...
 
Are you using wordpress?

If so, Theres a couple of backup plugins you can download for free to help you backup your site. Some of them will even e-mail you a copy as well.

Most require a signup to a 3rd party to enable the backups (if you are looking at storing it offsite too).

Otherwise, Use Filezilla FTP Client to back up your site manually. Don't forget if your using a database to back that up as well.
