I have an SEO client who is trying to rank for some ridiculously competitive keywords. I told him I would do my best, and I have, but so far I haven't seen anything from my xrumer, scrapebox blasts, or from social bookmarking even when I ping them. (It has been about two weeks and I am not even indexed for my target KWs) I am looking to make some progress ASAP otherwise my goose is cooked. My strategy now is to use AMR to do some low volume article blasts along with manually matching some highly competitive niches link for link.

The plan for that is to find the indexed links for some competitive, although, unrelated niches. (Searches related to internet marketing.) Then I am just going to go through and match them link for link manually. I know this is kind of old school, but I am getting desperate and at least I can get some links of definite value this way.

Do you think I should still ping the links or should I let them index naturally?

Let me know what you think about this plan. Thanks in advance BHW I owe you all the things. :)

What about inpage SEO? Is the website designed for SEO? If its not and the client doesn't want you to change it I would write an article on the target keyword put it on the website and blast the article url (old school as well but it works). Although the traffic is not on the main page your customer still gets the traffic..

I don't think pinging will do any favor to get them indexed more quickly. So I would suggest you to for few article submission for faster keyword position gaining.

I am working on their on page as far as title and H1 tags go, but I have some things holding me back:

1. It is only a storefront, their blog is offsite. They sell clothes and shoes.
2. Their URL structure is awful. Something like /cgi-bin/auto/filter.cgi?style=viewall

I don't know what to link to really. Do I link to a particular product that I want them to rank for or do I link to the mainsite and hope the title tags are enough...

Check out your competitors. Obviously they are doing something you are not. Copy their on-page and for off-page, avoid using things like SB or Xrumer. What has worked for me in the past has been Web 2.0s and paid links. For a super competitive keyword, you need some high quality links. Not just article submissions and blog comments.

Thanks for the help. Do you have a recommendation of where to get paid links.

Try this, for HIGH Competitive Keywords.
Outsource:
10 SUPER UNIQUE HIGH QUALITY ARticles (related to keyword and niche)
post that 10 articles into your website. the main site.
now spin 1 article into 30. so you have 300.
now do this in each 30 articles.
first 10:
submit to 10 web2.0 blogs. (squidoo, hubpages, bloger, blogspot webs. quizilla. etc.)
Do link wheel for those 10 web2.0 blogs, 2 keywords each article. 1 pointing to money site, other one pointing to other web2.0 blgos. (from 10 web2.0 blogs)

then the remaining 20:
Use it to create link pyramid.
example the first 2 of 20, use it to backlinks the one of the Link wheels.
still 2 backlinks each article. 1 pointing to web2.0 that you will be supporting, other one pointing to each other or point the other keyword to deep link from your money site.

do the rest same structure.

Now for the first tier which is the Link Wheel, Make sure to do Social Bookmarking.
2nd tier the link pyramid. do Social bookmarks also.

SENuke X, to support your backlinks.
Actually you can also use senuke x at your campaigns if you know how to use it well, or else you'll end up hurting your site.

Actually just go on with the same structure until you build more links.
Also don't forget the power of Youtube. Create a Youtube vidoe, make your Keyword as the Title of the Video.

And Don't forget to create Facebook Fan Page or Social Networking sites, for additional traffic and lead generation.

Been using this technique for quiet a while, and yes, It's pretty effective.

It sounds like the problem I used to have when I switched to OsC (big mistake BTW).
Anyway - like somebody already suggested - add a lot of content, do it outside of the script, even using static html. Yes, old school! Do a server rewrite (.htaccess) to clean the urls.

That's pretty much what I do myself. First get high quality links directly to your site and then give those links as much juice as it you. It pays out on even the hardest keywords. It's all about combing quality with quantity.

I thought about doing this (seo consulting) and even got approached but what the hell do you do when you screwed up and you end up disappearing from Google? Do you make them sign a disclaimer that they understand this may be a possibility?
