lol @Zwielicht just proved that you cannot live without Google. It's a very tough decision I would say and regarding being tracked, you are already being tracked as soon as your system is connected to the internet.

Google's ostensible ubiquity currently doesn't extend as far as most people think it does (although if things continue going the way they are, I wouldn't be surprised if Google has a product in ever niche). It's possible to avoid using Google products, it's just not always the best move for an Internet marketer (unless they own a site that relies on traffic from other sources and has absolutely no need for Google's services).

Regardless, OP is making an endeavour to do what many people talk about but never do; live a life without relying on Google.

He can end the tracking whenever he wants. Dropping google is not as difficult as most people think. There are plenty of alternative services for Email and DNS. If you absolutely NEED to use Google services, use them sandboxed behind VPN (I do it in a VM forced through VPN, to prevent cookie/js contamination). As for phones, flash stock AOSP Android ROM and do not install "gapps". gapps contains the Google Play services. It is optional to install. With no Play store you must obtain APKs from f-droid.
Only if you enable them to. Use noscript to forbid javascript from loading from untrusted hosts, this will greatly reduce the amount of information 3rd party advertisers can obtain. don't tie personal information to accounts. who can trust them to keep your info secure?

Freedom of speech doesn't apply to private services, and if you use services like thunderbird you won't be getting ads when you read your email. You also don't need a google account to use android.

This is not true. The "stock" Android ROM ("AOSP") does not come bundled with Google services. The "gapps" is installed separately, usually side by side. Most people install it when they flash their ROM, however it isn't *required*. Now, restrict access to Google servers from the local network(router level, preferably), and optionally enable VPN from Android settings. Might sound like lot of work, but if done correctly you can use your Android phone without making any connections to Google.
In my experience Google has been relatively tolerant towards freedom of speech. They have never censored my comments regarding certain subject of "sensitive" nature, while many other organizations have. Besides, they tolerate the use of TOR, which is the most important element of free speech on the internet.
