I have some big dreams, really big dreams. There?s a lot that I want to accomplish in the future, and I?m going to fight tooth and nail to make my dreams come true. This fall will mark my last semester as a full-time engineering student at a top 20 American university, and I?ll be entering the tech start-up scene full force with mountains of ideas behind me ? and little to no financial security or funding.

Realizing this last year, I?ve searched frantically for a good means of generating income on a student budget, while maintaining my studies on a heavy courseload. Eventually, I stumbled upon blackhatworld and started reading. I took action and built a thin affiliate site that made me a good $800-1000 a month, which was pretty cool until Panda 4.0 rolled around. Now that site is on the back end of page 3, although it?s still managed to generate the occasional sale over the past 2-3 weeks.

The good and bad part about that site is that I took action quickly ? I played around with several different offers, wordpress themes, and link types, but ended up with a classic amateur IMer site riddled with mistakes. The site has about 8500 backlinks, of which 35% target main keywords, 20% target generics/raw url, and 45% target LSIs of the main keywords. The overall link quality ranges from junk nofollow bookmarks, to PR6 homepage blog posts.

Obviously it?s not a good recipe for long-term rankings, so I?ve decided to just cut my losses and point a large package from t0mmy?s speedrank at it through a redirect. With that done, I?m going to take the lessons I?ve learned from building that site, and apply it to the mini-authority I?ve been building over the past three months.

The site I?ve been building is a mini-authority site targeted at a medium competition segment of the beauty niche.

Rather than being silly and giving away my keywords, I?m going to use ?Car? or ?Widgets? as a filler for the primary keyword I?m trying to rank for. I?ll be using the Prose child theme from Genesis for this site, with a silo structure based around the major brands of this product.

Keyword Research
Broad topic keyword (Let?s say Classic Automobiles or something) ? 165000 m/s
Car ? 74000 m/s
Best Car ? 6600 m/s.
Car reviews 9900 s/s

My domain is a .org EMD for ?Car Reviews?

The Homepage
I?ve written a high-quality 1700 word article on the homepage of the site targeting my 4 primary keywords. It starts off with ?Best Cars 2014? as the h1 title tag with a table comparing 5 products, with links to amazon for all of them. Underneath the table, I?ve written a comprehensive buyer?s guide on choosing a product based on individual needs, ending with links to the silo landing pages I?ve made (Anchors: Toyota, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, etc) and useful user?s tips below that. The navigation menu has the typical ?Home, Contact, About us, Terms of Use, Private Policy?, and the brand landing pages on a dropdown.

Homepage Rankings
My keywords show up in h1 and h2 tags, the meta title, meta description, and meta keywords. All external links are nofollow
Classic Automobiles: #289, 1.58% keyword density
Cars: #165, 1.82% keyword density
Car Reviews: #53, 1.09% keyword density
Best Cars: #124, 0.74% keyword density

I have to go see my adviser now for summer physics research, I?ll continue the thread once I?m back

Good luck on your journey and congrats on the previous success. Wish I would have gotten into this a few years ago during college. I too am in to the startup scene but this is my side money, or will be one I start making it. Good luck...

For my homepage, I plan on focusing on manual web 2.0s with a NHSEO PR1+ <100 obl campaign and blog posts from the BST. Right now, I have 10 juiced up web 2.0s with single articles pointed on it, 5 with exact URLs, 2 with "Car Reviews", and 1 each with "Cars, Classic Automobiles,Best Cars". Going to throw in a whole bunch of other low value links with generic anchors for the sake of diversity

Silo Pages
So far, I've created landing pages (linked from the homepage) for 4 of the 6 major manufacturers in the niche. On each silo page, I've written 400 words of fluff on the corresponding brand and information their major product lines. At the end of the post, I've created tables comparing their major lines, and strapped links to the supporting pages below the tables. Each silo page has 4 to 8 different, each targeting a different item from that brand. Let's use an automobile equivalent for their search terms. I plan on throwing up silos soon for the 2 remaining brands, and writing/ordering more product reviews for those two.

Toyota Car- 2900 m/s
Ford Car - 9900 m/s
GM Car - 5400 m/s
Chrysler Car - 1900 m/s

Linkbuilding Anchors: 20% "Manufacturer Car, Manufacturer, Car" 30% Brand/Product anchors, 50% generic/Raw URL
Permalink Structure: http: / / domain.org / manufacturer

Landing Page 1 - Codename "Ford"

Product Reviews: 8 ( 7 fluff, 1 big winner that sells for $130 on amazon)
Keyword Densities:
Brand name: 2.81%
Car - 2.51%
Ford - 2.51%
Classic Cars - 2.09%
Ford Car - 1.67%
Car Reviews: 1.67%

Landing Page 2 - Codename "GM"
Product Reviews: 4 (High Quality 1000+ words)
Keyword Densities
Brand: 3.10%
GM: 2.44%
Car: 2.22%
GM Car: 2.22%
Classic Automobiles: 1.77%

Landing Page 3 - Codename "Toyota"
Product Reviews: 7
Keyword Densities
Brand: 3.39%
Car: 2.97%
Toyota: 2.12%
Classic Automobiles: 2.54%
Toyota Car: 1.69%
Car Reviews: 1.69%

I tried to trim down the densities as much as I could, but it looks like I'm going to be stuck with some that are well over 2.5%, hoping that doesn't lead to a panda slap down the road.

Landing page 4 is unfinished, hope to get that done this weekend.

Good luck on your journey and congrats on the previous success. Wish I would have gotten into this a few years ago during college. I too am in to the startup scene but this is my side money, or will be one I start making it. Good luck...
Hoping to make enough to make a living off this :D

Nice journey....Congratulations and Good luck mate for your journey ahead. :)

I've been waiting to see a Journery using a Silo structure. this should be interesting, Good luck!

On-Site Progress today

Did a whole bunch of calibrating for site speed with CSS/JS minification, page caching, and getting the site hooked on to my MaxCDN subscription. Finished the 3 of the "sales copy" reviews covering the 5 $100+ products I'm promoting on the homepage table. Got the load speed down to around 1s from ~5s

Also finished writing articles for the major 100-2000 m/s longtails of interest, and linked out to them at the bottom of my homepage. The articles are along the lines of "X vs Y", "How to ____" and "____ guide".

Good luck on your journey OP! Subscribed to this thread.

Best of luck op going to follow you.

Posted 5 reviews today for the 2900 m/s landing page and one article for the 9900 m/s landing page. They finally appeared in the SERPs at #59 and #32 respectively, while the EMD keyword has moved to #49

Some Russian IP has been trying to guess my wp-admin login for the past 3 days. I've set the login page to redirect to Goatse after 5 failed attempts

very organized and well thought out, I suggest removing meta keywords if you are having trouble with density and having an image with alt tag.

Good luck on your journey. I have found that ranking pages in google is by far the best way to make money. I am glad to see you are on the right path. I wish you the best OP

Keyword updates:

Homepage
Broad Niche: #289
Keyword: #126
EMD(Keyword + Reviews): #53
Best + Keyword: #112

Landing Pages

Manufacturer 1: #31
Manufacturer 2: #51
Manufacturer 3: #83

To Do
1. Finish writing articles and tables for manufacturer/landing page 4 and 5, maybe plan out a sixth landing page for the brands that are too small to really build a silo out of.
2. Build up a silo for the "Best Keyword" keyword. There're about 12 longtails with 500-2300 m/s involving topics such as "Best Keyword for Men" "Best Keyword for Women", "Best Keyword for Teenagers" etc.
