i understand the necessity for this whole design, I'd say it's culture but can it be less tacky?

The lounge is tacky but it's also the weekend so bear that in mind.

Other subforums are more serious/focused.

The real question is: What would you change about the design to make it feel less tacky?

You can change the theme from dark to light or vice versa. Perhaps that will help you. Aside from that, it wasn’t that long ago the site design was refreshed so it’s not likely to change in the near future.
