My forum is blowing up - Help please

Make sure you're using a good host, if not the traffic could crash your site and you'll miss out on potential members. Also you'll need to filter out the spam posts and etc, I'd suggest hiring people like mods to do that for you unless you have a lot of spare time. Also make sure if members want to sign up they need to do an email confirmation. Best of luck with your site

I'm using Glowhost - Spam-O-Matic it's anti spam mod that stops all the spammers from registering,posting etc... google for "Glowhost - Spam-O-Matic" it's the best mod out for VB.

If it's not broken, don't fix it.

You have the traffic already, a large user base and lot's of activity. You get FREE content daily, google spiders feed themselves, all good.

Now work on getting help (moderators), getting real links to the homepage and expending the user base (competitions, guest posts, related forums).

Simply rel Nofollow will solve it, your forum wont passing any link juice to those spammer and wont hurt your ranking either. Matt Cutts told me everything about it

I'm kinda starting to think this thread is trying to attract people over to his forum..

I never mentioned the name of my forum and I never put a link anywhere, so I don't see how this could be my motivation here...

Thanks for the advice guys I really appreciate it. I'm starting to get better at manually controlling the spam but plugins would also be good to help me out.

Should I be allowing do follow links on posts/threads by legitimate members, or should I be making all outgoing links nofollow by default?

IMO, no-follow is best for forums, and do-follow is placed on pages by admin only, just what I do though. My boards have an option in the ACP to auto no-follow all links, not sure about VB.

Another thing: I do not allow guests to view profiles. this reduces unnecessary bandwidth consumption from robots mostly. My deny from list is very long in my .htaccess file from blocking all kinds of bots from eating my bandwidth on my boards.
