If this is the wrong forum, please help direct me to the correct one.

This is my first time transacting on BHW. I'm thinking about transacting with a seller.

Couple questions:
1)How is trust enabled here? If my job costs $400, is there an escrow service that BHW provides, or do I transact on Paypal?
2) How do I ensure that the person does a good job ... is there a mechanism where the seller offers a service and then upon completion we can leave each other reviews?

Pay by pp, check his earlier reviews, make sure yiu understood what you’re buying, screen shot each and every conversation if he doesn’t deliver what he advertised then open a shit list

Only deal with Jr VIP members - First check. After that make sure the Jr VIP member has been here for years with good TRADE FEEDBACK and positive reviews on his/her BST.

If the member doesn't deliver as promised. You can create a shitlist : https://www.blackhatworld.com/forums/dispute-resolution.31/ (Means to get your money back )

If all work good, You can leave a review on the BST (Sales thread) or trader feedback using mine as example: https://www.blackhatworld.com/trade/topiano.923417/

Make sure you pay via Paypal.

Check seller reviews, especially recent reviews.

Make sure you know what kind of service you're ordering. A problem with most new buyers is that they don't know much of what they're ordering. The seller will provide you a report upon completion but you aren't sure of how to tell if he/she actually did a good job. So do research on the type of service you're ordering.

Thanks for the link. First line says this: If a user doesn't have a BST/Services thread approved by a moderator - don't buy. How can you tell if their services thread was approved by a moderator?

All of the marketplace threads are approved by a marketplace moderator or above (Super Moderator, Administrator).

Is he in the marketplace? If no, then dont do it..

Next, check the shitlist section to get an idea how scams happen!

Yes, pay by Paypal or credit card to give yourself the option of getting a refund, if you want that measure of protection. Keep in mind though that sellers have been known to be ripped off by buyers, who get real value from the provider, then chargeback anyway. You may want to be flexible and fair in making your arrangements so both sides feel protected.

All BSTs are approved by a Moderator or Admin.

If you post a WTB or HAF thread, then you can also get Premium Members ( purple usernames ) apply for this job.

Just keep in mind, any member ( doesn't matter if they have been here 10 minutes or 10 years ) with a yellow username is NOT allowed to sell or offer services. Any that do, please report them.

Slightly confused here. What's the difference between trade feedback and positive reviews on the BST? In the link you gave above, https://www.blackhatworld.com/trade/topiano.923417, I assume this is for trade feedback? Can you give me an example of positive reviews on BST?

Do people typically pay in full before work starts or some % now and % upon completion? If the latter, what is the typical % breakdown?

Just about every marketplace seller requires payment upfront. Sellers answering hire-a-freelancer postings may accept a half upfront, half later arrangement, and sometimes payment after the work is done (or done for the month).

It's upfront most of the cases. I assume some sellers may make exceptions to well known members/"friends". But in your case, I cannot see a seller selling you like you suggest to you, not because you're a scammer, but because buyers (especially new users) may sometimes scam sellers as well, so everybody (buyers and sellers alike) is trying to reduce the risk of a scam.

It depends on the service. I always do half upfront, half after completion. Every time I've done full upfront, it always becomes a headache getting work delivered work on time.

The whole reason I joined this forum is for the Marketplace...

It seems there is a lot of accountability placed on sellers, and that is why I like it. Not only are the sales threads verified by admins/mods, but there is also a Shitlist section kind of like a court, in case you get scammed.

So I'd feel pretty safe ordering from confirmed sellers here. Infact, I've done 2 orders already. And both have been perfect.

What I strongly dislike about the selling here.. is that some sellers ignore questions, or vanish for a long time without answering. I refuse to support them. But I also don't understand why this forum allows it. I wish there was a bit better accountability, to be honest.

Prior reviews, payment by paypal are both key. A defined scope of work will protect both parties. Search out the threads and what some of the mods (or regular people you respect here) have to say about them. That's what I did when I bought a domain here a couple months ago. I asked the seller a lot of questions, got very knowledgeable and detailed answers. I saw that @BassTrackerBoats spoke very highly of the individual, and BTB is someone who I previously came to respect for his knowledge and interactions in the boards here. I made the purchase and was very happy with the results. Even sent a thank you to BTB for his review in the sales thread approval message.
