You've got to go for viral. I suggest something very quirky and unique with high replay value.

Use press releases and create a story, a brand.

Then it wouldn't matter where you rank in the istore rankings. If you're pulling enough interest from press releases and after-effects of these then that is enough.

Is it possible to program apps in Delphi? I heard that was real easy to learn.

Not sure about Delphi, but using those 3rd party solutions will cost you and leave you at the mercy of the company that can change their terms of service or fee structure at any time. I weighed the options heavily before deciding to buy a macbook. The macbook is a one time investment that gets you XCode for free and allows you to be able to sign app builds without paying per app build (such as with Dragonfire SDK).

Plus XCode give you access to many built in libraries and classes to make coding much faster. I haven't reached that step yet, but I'm glad to know that it will be there waiting for my arrival.

For starters, you shoulda' just made a hackintosh. You should be looking to min/max everything you do, and if all your looking for is xcode and objective c, why did you buy a mac?

I'd really suggest trying to tackle android first.

You can use Java for almost anything. It's easy to market a program in Java to ANYONE using ANY OS. So if it doesn't work out, use that knowledge to program something desktop based and move on to objective.

It disappoints me how many people are so negative about business ventures.

The Wright Brothers were told they were crazy for trying to invent a "flying machine".

Thomas Edison was routinely ridiculed for his ventures to create the "light bulb".

Mozart was considered a hack and a drunk.

Einstein was told he was stupid in high school.

This list could go on forever. The point is, screw all the naysayers and negative people. The ONLY people who make it big are the people who aren't afraid to dream big. If you don't have big dreams, then you might as well call it quits and go back to work for the man.

I went with a Mac because a Mac is required for app signing. With a hackintosh you have to worry about the equipment compatibility and updates from apple that could potentially leave your hackintosh OS X unable to be upgraded. I weighed the hack Mac option but ultimately it's easier to have licensed apple equipment and OS X.

Its about $300 for a hackintosh on Dell mini with a useless 10 inch screen or $500 for a fully compatible MacBook that I don't have to force a foreign operating system onto. My Mac is used but in mint condition.

As I mentioned before android/java is the next move, but I'm enjoying learning obj-c at the moment.

Taking a nite off from studying to watch the super bowl. My Steelers are down 21 - 10 in the 3rd and I need a rally.

Wait Steelers just rushed for another touchdown. 21-17 now.

Funny thing is if the steelers listened to some of the commenters in this thread they would have give up on the game because they fell behind early. But like my beloved steelers I welcome competition and I don't give up either.

The thing with user apps is that you need ideas. Learning some SDK can land you a job with someone that has these ideas, nothing more. Do you have an idea for a never before seen app?

A relatively unsaturated market (yet) is the new windows phone 7. MS used to offer the last real pocket PC platform, now they too turned to flashy moronic uncostomizable interface. Many developers are boycotting it (myself included) so newcomers stand a pretty good chance for now. One option for easy money is porting the most popular iphone and android aps.

I currently own windows phone (6.5) and the user base isn't growing that fast. I picked it over android because it's a true pocket pc unlike android and iOS.

Fortunately I have a few app ideas that are untapped.

marco2379, i don't know much about apple app but since you're good at being a mechanic why not make an app which has something to do with it. think of this app as cbt (computer based training) app where newbie mechanic and students can learn something from this app. You can even go and promote this app to your community college or training schools. One tip, have schools endorse your product, give them something in return, some kind of incentive, a percentage in sale or something maybe.

OR you can build an app where maybe you could put an ad or a product link in it so if users are interested they can check it out right away. just my 1 cent advice. Cheers and more success to your new business. :shakehand

Let me clarify, I'm not an ASE mechanic, I'm 100% self taught in auto mechanics (being mechanically inclined helped). I started small with oil changes and worked onto installing transmissions, engines, etc. Learning and buying the tools as I went along. Will I ever work at a garage? No but I don't get ripped off by mechanics anymore. Point is you can learn almost anything that you put your mind and time into.

While I'm learning I'm jotting down ideas as they come to me. I've always kept a notepad beside my bed to document any ideas I have in dreams or while reflecting on my day before falling asleep.

Now I'm looking at the world of convenience not for what we have but for what we don't have yet.

An app is nothing more than convenience. Most PC's can do more than an app but the app brings convenience of instant access and portability whether it's games or utilities. Whenever I think "I wish I could ........ with my iPod", I write that down, because that's the necessity that is the mother of invention, that is the missing convenience, and that is my niche.

This is the way I look at things.

Back on the study grind after a weekend that saw my Steelers lose, and my wife trying everything in her power to eat away at my time to study. Sunday night she messed up her exhaust driving through too much snow and ice for her car. So I have to fix that Monday instead of studying. Then Monday night she breaks the water line on the fridge ice maker while I'm working overnights, and proceeds to flood the kitchen. She can't follow my directions to fix it so I just have her turn off all the water until I got home today to fix it. I was on the phone with her for an hour explaining what she needed to do fix it and finally told her to leave it for me to fix. 10 minutes after I get home this morning I had the water line repaired. Almost ready to get back to studying, but wait... the driveway has about 8 inches of snow, so back out to shovel and snow blow the driveway in 12 degrees (without the wind chill) with the wind blowing snow like a nor'easter. So cold that I couldn't feel my fingers, I had to go back inside to warm up, add more layers of clothing and go back out to finish the job.

Now I'm so tired that I'm seeing stars, been up all night at work just to come home and work all morning. Took a well deserved nap and so that I can actually absorb information while I'm learning obj-c. In the middle of my studying, here comes the wife with another plan to get me away from obj-c, she wants to go out for some drinks (and she doesn't even drink...ever). No I say, I have work to do. I'd have more time if she wasn't breaking everything in the house and the driveway for me to waste time fixing.

Thanks guys for letting me vent. With all the reality checks I've received on this thread, no one mentioned the wife factor in derailing any good project before it gets started.

Today I covered multiple arguments to methods, it was actually a refresher to one of the basic topic covered in Apple's publication of Object-Oriented Programming with Objective-C. The example programs are decent for illustrating the usage. I plan on finishing this book within the next week, if I am left to my own devices by the wife. We'll see how that goes.
