My Failed Attempt At Local SEO, (learn from my mistakes)

I agree on this one
"Take on 1 project at a time, only move on to the next project once completed and you have achieved results! This is a good lesson not only for local
SEO but anything in life."

One at a time, because it is hard to concentrate on many things at the same time. Multitasking wouldn't get you anywhere

Some really nice dos and donts you got there. Is it true what I read that for local SEO hosting locally is best?

I think as long as you have hosting in the same country then that's fine

Ok, I totally Messed up at Local SEO, so don't make the same mistakes that I did.....

Lesson Learned - Don't build backlinks with exact match anchors! Especially when you have the EMD.

One question ! How to rank the keywords if you are suggestion not to build links with the "exact match anchor" ? Of course there will be anchor text diversity but what about the keywords with exact match ?

Patience is the key but im a impatience guy........lol

The idea is to build contextual links that are surrounded by text that contain your keywords, rather than just using your main keywords as the anchor. Your actual anchor will be your url or something generic. This post explains exactly how I do it

Google can pick up on the content that your link comes from. You do not need to make it so obvious by using your keyword anchor. If you have an EMD and then start to build links with the same keyword then you are going to get slapped!! Un-natural link building. I'll write a full post about it on here when I get time :-)

Thanks for the info ! I gotta do some experiments :)

Also one question, if you say you have to rank your URL for country specific google ... let's say google.fr

What suggestion and advice you can give for that ?

1) Money site in french or english ? ( if you have just english version of contents )
2) Backlinks from french or english anchor texts ?

This is why a lot of people fail doing local seo or even reputation management because they lack in seo knowledge in the first place. They try selling something that they haven't done before only because so many ppl are doing it.

It's a good reminder though. Good job OP.

If you wanted to rank in France then surely you would want your site to be in French!!
If it's a local site that you are trying to rank in france then you want want to look at getting links from sites that include information about the particular area you are trying to rank for.

You would also be better getting hosting with a company in France

Hope this helps :-)

Lots of local ranking factor is there. You can go http://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors

How is this done? What does scraping mean and do you submit manually?

Basically you need to come up with a list of directories that allow local listings, you can use scrapebox but I simply find my competitors that are already ranking, type their url into the Google search and then look through the results as most of them will be directories, i.e. Thomson local, yell, 192 and tons of others. If your competitors are doing it then you need to do the same!!

I have a question about NAP.. I am developing a business that will be home based, but I do not want to publish my home address.. I have thought about getting a UPS Store type address, but thought if it were googled, it would show that it is not an actual 'location'.. Thought about a PO box, but thought that would not instill trust in visitors/customers.. What do you suggest?

Thanks,

--Rich
