This is one of the more intelligent threads here on bhw and @aincientaliens initial post reminds me of something i used to do back in the day.
When you are buying cheap traffic remember it is cheap for a reason. But you can make a profit if you look to do so more long term as @aincientalien said you can retarget, you have to be careful but you can also cookie stuff.
To give you an example of what you could do using the ops iphone example is if they dont opt in ultimately lead them to a huge online store, i am from the uk and used argos, showing the iphone for no discount. I dont care if they buy that or not what i care about is if they bought anything from, in my case argos, in the next 30 days, because then i got a commission. So it was subtle cookie stuffing and i never got caught.
I am sure there are people reading this thread who could bring that concept upto date and benefit.
The issue with this approach is that most network or advertiser uses a LIFO for cookies. Meaning they only pay for the latest cookies and anything before that is of no value. How can we be sure that the cookies that we place is going to be the latest. This is going to be a number game with this approach and the breakeven point will be very hard to predict if we uses this appoach unless there are advertisers who are willing to pay on FIFO basis.
