again question:) hope you not tired answering my silly questions yet:
when writing articles(posts) for web2.0s do you use topic close to your KWs? or more general?
Let say we creating web 2.0 to link to category page optimized for 'woman leather handbags'
Should web 2.0 be also a optimized for this KW - example 'Top 10 leather handbags for woman',
or less direct - for example 'Fashion Handbags Guide'.

1. Google rewards you if your link is from related content. So, if the linking page was on anything relative...purses...handbags....womens fashion....your going to get a boost. It doesn't have to be exact, just relevant.

2. You can still link from generic web 2.0's and get a boost, just not as big.


What a lot of people do, is they will create niche specific networks....so "fashion", "finance", "health", and link to multiple sites. So a health site can link to a dentist site, a site on acne, and a site on curing hemorrhoids.

For social links, for instance links from twitter or whatever, something like "check out this great blog on (insert niche) which I found www(dot)website(dot)com

Linking 100% unrelated content can look spammyish
 
rschmitz, I've been following your journeys because I'm going in the same direction as you. I've also PM'd you a few times with some questions. Could you explain how you go about selecting the perfect keyword for the home page? What would be the best criteria to go after do you think? (searches per month/competition/PA/DA)

I've started writing articles but I didn't get a chance to start on my home page yet.

WP is just an engine for your website, and it can look and be structured however you want it, using pages or posts.

As OP has stated there are several ways to silo a WP site, and you can use categories/posts no problem if you use plugins such as page2cat and categoryheaders etc etc.

sorry , but i am just posting what is written in wp faq's and i am quite fascinated about pages.

some php codes are enough to turn a page wp site in a simple silo.

haha, I still don't have this quite down myself. Its tough balancing relevancy with good keywords. If you go too broad...in order to find good keywords, they might not be super relevant. If your too narrow, your stuck to just a few keywords.

I go for an intermediate route. So like, some people might build a site around "survival knives", which I think is way too narrow. Others might build a site around "weapons", which I think is way too broad. I would build a site around "knives".

So now, if "survival knives" looks attractive, I would then build out a category page, and then support articles around survival knives.

Survival Knives will now give a boost to any new category you would want to rank for. So, for instance swiss army knives, or rambo knives.


BTW, what I said earlier about ranking using relevancy. If you want to rank for a keyword, say "ant farms", the best backlinks that you can get, are from pages already in Googles top 100. I go after niche, because I like to use my web 2.0's for many projects, but you can go after exact. So, building a web 2.0 around a long tail is perfect. "What are the Cheapest Ant Farms" as a title for a Web 2.0 page, with a link pointed to a page where you want to rank "ant farms", is gold.
 
A great thread mate, a screeshot of earnings would have been better but the advices on siloing the categories are really awsome.

See what position you are in after just the main post, if your on page 2 or 3, I might even suggest you skip support articles if your on a large website, as the domain authority will eventually prop up that page.

The "Product XXX Review" is always an easy way to rank for specific products.

In keywords like "XXXX review" Amazon and other e-commerce sites almost always appears in the 3 top positions.

I have read that it is very hard to beat. It is true?

You don;t think theres any trust issues on the user end

The same guy reviewing chef cordon bleau cooking knives is also reviewing wilderness john locke survival knives.

Maybe the cookers don't care, but anyone searching for wilderness gear would. I know knives was just an example but the point is the same for nearly all niches.

Sure, you don't want to have something that doesn't make sense. However, if your building a site around knives as my example, chances are people will assume that you are an authority on knives if you play the part. Obviously you don't want to mix in a lot of cooking lingo when reviewing your cooking knife since the site is about knives and not cooking, however you can use a lot of knife specific jargon when describing the knife just fine. Just stick to the main theme of what the site is about. Saying that somebody might trust a survival site on survival knives versus a knife site on survival knives is purely subjective.
