I'm not going to say much about the niche, but my competitor is a tumblr blog. Will it be hard to outrank ?

All they post is pictures, I'll be posting pictures and articles.

What's your opinion on this ?

My effort is right up there, I just wanted to know if it'll be easier to beat a tumblr blog than to beat an actual domain (.com).
 
you are up against only the page not the domain, just do what they did and more.

If that fails, blackhat :P
 
Depends on yr site. If ur onpage/offpage is above the average u can beat him.

actually, Tumbler have a very good system of internal linking and link juice sharing, so often tumbler blogs have much weight.

Good thing is that you can add your own website link in that tumbler blog as comment/liked.
 
IMO it's not that easy, because tumblr reblogs has a powerful link juice (well, it depends on his blog). You can beat him with $ you put in. I don't say it's impossible.
