My client was hacked. Quick question.

I'm with a web development company and we have a client whos site was hacked within the last year and when looking over his backlinks, discovered that several (most in fact) were made by some guy using the name DaDave to promote his porn site(s) on miscellaneous forums. Now here is my question: Are the links helpful or harmful and if so, how should we go about handling this situation. It's my fear that these links are hurting him and keeping him from climbing past the second or third page results.
