A client of mine has gotten a reccomendation from a friend of his who also owns there own business that he should completely change his domain.

The domain now is just his business name which does not have the city or state in it.

His friend suggested he change his domain to something like www.chiropractor{city}.com

Something along those lines. His friend has said that he did that around 6 months ago and his ranking has skyrocketed. I have never heard of someone starting over from scratch and using a domain like that before, but I was curious if anybody else has any experience in doing this.

If so please let me know how it went and if it would be worth it.

    Thanks.

Most business owners doesn't care about showing their name on the internet, they just want new leads. I wouldn't change the domain name if it's old and I don't believe that he has "skyrocketed" in 6 months. It takes years to build reputation for local results.

It really doesn't take years, it takes weeks. Most of my clients have results within the very first month. Very rarely has it ever taken even 3 months with the exception of very competitive industries and cities, like NYC, LA, Chicago, etc but even then you're looking at about 6 months.

Yes, changing the domain is common. Exact match domains for city and service specific keywords get a pretty decent advantage. However, I anticipate that changing as relevance increases along with branding.

There's really no reason your client should be thinking about starting all over. If you're doing everything right, he should be in one of the top spots whether it's his current domain or a new domain. On page optimization is a huge factor when it comes to local SEO. Changing the URL structure to contain keywords and location might be a good idea if you're not gaining traction.

You can give it a shot, buy that domain ( 10$ ), invest minimum amount of effort for SEO to see how it ranks, if it will rank good with little SEO work than you can continue with more SEO further

EMD has been dramatically deprecated in the last couple of years, so my reaction is "Who is the "friend", and what is their reasoning?" It's possible there's a good reason, but highly doubtful.

Did the "friend" also a strategy for preserving all the old backlinks? Because if you completely kill-off the old domain, you lose all the juice going to the old site, and for what reason? What's the off-setting positive?

Starting from scratch is generally a really stupid idea, and the only time, the ONLY time it's necessary is when some business owner has made the mistake of hiring one of these supposed "Blackhat Local SEO" idiots that do stupid "methods" like spamming YouTube with fake videos in order to artificially elevate an undeserving business in the SERPs.

Here's what these IDIOTS don't tell you:

Google Local Search results is not just a one way street. They can receive communication about local listings and react/act on it. So for example when I am playing the game the right way and doing things right and some jerk of an SEO spams their client to get results higher than my client, I complain about it to Google and frequently get them penalized or dropped completely. There are times when Google is a dumb algorithm and a dumb computer and there are times when it's a sentient, thinking human being that doesn't have any trouble at all with punishing someone for trying to cheat.

One friend I know kept listening to these two jokers from (here) BHW, and their BS was so persuasive that he couldn't hear me. I'd tell him a, b and c and these guys would dazzle him with made-up concepts and meaningless phrases and from his perspective I was a doddering granny too scared to actually drive the car and these guys were super-high falutin' gurus that knew-all, did-all and anyways long story short they got his website completely deindexed and he had to start all over again from scratch.

So maybe there's more to the story and starting from scratch is the only viable alternative because someone has already screwed the pooch.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yap! Yap, yap, yap! YAP!
Meaningless drivel makes the uninformed reader feel like there is "oh so much to know, and I know so little" and "please PLEASE swami F. Guru, PLEASE grace us with your presence and bestow upon us the gift of your swami guruness."

"My clients have been very pleased with the page 1 results I've delivered by pre-executing the trans-flux dynamic of fundamental social market forces, along with a coincident layer of media networking and backlinking blasts, we're exponentially growing consumer responsivity to well-beyond previously unexpected results. And the money just keeps rolling in automatically, and forever."

Q: What did you just understand from the above?
A: I'm an SEO, I have clients, I made-up a lot of complicated gobbledegook that sounds intimidating and someone is making a LOT of money.

What's implicit is the idea that if you hire me, I'll wave my +3 Wand of Gobbledegook over your business and "the money" will starting automatically rolling for you, too. Limited time & availability! Act NOW! Before it's too late.

It would most likely be a mistake starting over from scratch unless there was a good reason to do so.

I never use any of my customers existing domain. 9 times out of 10 their website has garbage backlinks that tarnish their long term ranking value. Google is looking or organic viral when it comes to local. Backlink Reputation matters a lot when getting ranking locally.
