My associates site is being nuked (NSEO)

Just looking for some advice or even just some commentary on an issue that is happening to someone I knows website.

Their website is a legitimate business website, good quality content, nothing black hat or spammy - For the last 2 years or more their backlink profile has been pretty normal, no dramatic changes and 100% natural.

In approximately August they had 50,000 backlinks across 87 Unique Domain names (A couple of those domain names are site wide links, 16,000 links at least and a few thousand from things like scoop it and pinterest)

By the start of April (under 8 months later) they had lost 30,000 back links and GAINED an additional 120 UNIQUE linking domains at least. Almost 100% of the gained domains are spammy, a good majority of them are spun blogger websites.
The rapid gaining of spammy linking domains began occurring at exactly the same time that they started hemorrhaging their existing links.

I'd post you a link of the graph, but my account is to new to post URLS....

Had they just lost the links I could pass it off as a couple of large sites closing down....
Had they just began having their content posted on spammy blogger sites without losing their existing backlinks I could pass it off as a spammer spinning up websites....

But the fact both things happened at exactly the same time just seems tooooooooo suspect!

Do you guys think this looks like a NSEO campaign?
What is your opinion?

Well... I would advise your friend to start disavowing those links...

Even if it does not affect the current ranking, it surely will do so in the nearest future, except God is with you.

I would advice you friend to disavow these links pointing to his website as fast as he can, and yes, if his website is a business and legitimate, why not report it to google spam team and say some persons are blasting their websites with spammy links?

He is disavowing the bad link. The issue is the tremendous drop in backlinks cannot just be replaced or recovered from.

You would agree though, it's dodgy right?

I got attacked couple of months ago. I rarely build new links on that site and it's not an authority. I made about 20 low/semi quality links on it before the attack and it was ranked at the top, where it should be. I got additional 20k links from NSEO attack (according to Majestic). All spam link with exact anchor from viagra/cialis/porn sites.

What happened? Nothing. I submitted all new links to disavow tool via GWT and my site gained a couple of spots in SERP. This site had a record breaking month by 20% in April. I'm starting to believe that Google is my friend.

DA/PA was like 14/20 before, now it's 30/40. TC/TF was like 3/5 before, now it's 9/25. Hooray, now I can sell HQ links on DP.

Anyone got tips on how one might be able to try and link all the backlinks together?
Any particular way to follow it all back to an NSEO agency or anything?

I know it's a long shot....

UPDATE:
We have found a word for word clone of our site hosted on a very similar domain that uses a frame.
We promptly blew out the frame....

This is looking very dodgy.
