It works. I suggest you to build up enough content on one niche first, then go slowly to other niches. Or the overall ranking will be visibly slow.
Unless you get ultra high quality content for each post you publish, then you can go freely post whatever you want regardless of niches.

He is talking about gradually expanding the niches as you build strong presence in one niche first. Once your ground is strong and you are known as an authority in that niche you can slowly add content related to sub-niches or the similar topics over the period of time.

Be specific to more on quality of information, genuinity and more valuble information to the content you produce. As per the recent google update, they stressed much on the quality of contents and one who produces the quality has a better ranking.
