Must Google Play app icon be unique?

Let's say there used to be an app hosted on a rival platform. That app is gone, but its icon still exists on the web. This icon has never been used on the Play Store. I would like to use this icon, but I am concerned Google's systems will do a reverse image search and flag it up when it finds exact matches.

@I Have No Hat My advice to you is to avoid using the same icon, notwithstanding the fact that it hasn’t been used on Play store before. I would suggest you develop a new icon that may be similar to the original icon or not the same (for legal reasons, amongst others).

Its probably more of a copyright problem. Google doesnt know that its not your app icon just because its somewhere on the internet. I still wouldnt do it unless you have permission to use the icon.

If it is not your app, you can not use it, because you can get copyright complain and your app will be suspended. Design a new icon, you can use Fiver or search for some designers here at BHW. You can ask designer to make a similar icon and you will not have any issues.

If it was your own app - you could use this Icon
If not yours - you could not, Google bot could track it

I would recommend you to design the several eye-catching Icons following the ASO rules and to a/b test its performance in a built-in Google Play tool to find the best one for your app and your targeted audience
