You need to make sure you have a market before spending time and money building links.

I am 2 weeks into a 30 day trial with Raven tools, and so far I think its pretty damn awesome. Landed a new account by spending 15 minutes to throw together some reports out of it. I outsource my link building (using linkpushing and fiverr gigs) as that crap is way too tedious, and focus my efforts on customer management ~ tracking and analysis are key to this.

I trialed it and it WAS good. Not cheap, but a VERY nice one-stop.

I have scrapebox but have yet to learn how to use it for all the various things that people have mentioned. So far I have only used it for commenting. One tool that I really like though and nobody has really mentioned yet is Micro Niche Finder.

I have only started using it properly over the last 3 days but I think it is great for finding a niche and gives you a lot of info to help you along.
 
I think you need a only few tools to cover the basics.

Micro Niche Finder: Keyword research
The Best Spinner: Spinning content for mass submission
Scrapebox: Scraping unique site lists for submitting + all the other functions
Submitter/Backlinking: Sick Submitter -Ultimate Demon - Magic Submitter (In order of cost, Choose 1 )

If you can't make $$$ with the basic set above, you can't make money. It's not about getting more tools.
