multiple sites on one ip?

Is it really that bad? I don't mean thousands or even hundreds but 5 or 10 reasonably good niche sites sharing one ip is going to be penalized somehow?

Given that ipv4 space is just about run out and ipv6 is voodoo it seems a bit much for google to effectively force everyone to waste a vanishing resource..

This question is puzzling me for some time.I always use different ip for every website/hosting just to be on the safe side but I'm really intereseted in a response from someone.

Google know, most of the sites are on shared hosting, But if you are doing interlinking those niche sites, then just use c class Ips or some other Hosts

5 to 10 sites will be fine... as long as that is not your entire linking network.

I would not make them all related. some backlinking between them should be limited, but still do-able.

using multiple IP's is always ideal... but you work with what you have.

do it and don't worry about it. The only thing I would say is don't make them all the same niche.

I run about 6 right now on the same hosting. i might have a couple links between them, but they are all different niches, so my back linking comes from other IP's

nimmivh and elE3k have good recommendations about hosting on an individual IP, especially if you are linking to each of your sites. In either case, Google can sniff out these sorts of things.

For fun I just contacted two companies I host with and asked them this same question:

"What issues are there or could I have if I have multiple sites on one ip"

The only issue you may run into would be with SSL's, if you have an SSL installed on one of the site s on that domain, the other sites will redirect to that site if you go to https after ignoring the security error for not having an ssl.

HostGator says:
There shouldn't be any issues or problems as long as the files are in different directories.

When I probed them with a follow up question, "What about any issues that Google might have with me hosting on the same IP?"

I would not really be able to advised on how google search results would react to that. We do not offer seo support so I am not sure.

It really shouldn't effect anything with Google, however we cannot guarantee any changes in your SEO rankings. However Our experience shows it shouldn't effect it.
