multiple KW PHRASES ..Does it Work?

I'm small potatoes starting out. I'll quickly explain where am at or what I'm trying to do because it might help with a greater understanding of the question I want to ask;

1. "rank" articles I place in directories on serp's
2. send some of the traffic via direct link to the advert
3. other articles I will send to my site instead
4. "rank" (slower) my site in the process starting off
5. single page site(at this point)
6. Focus on smaller sub niches, with less competition


I've read quite a bit about KW research, however I notice there seems to be a school of thought that suggest using "multiple" keyword phrases for the same niche (I believe I'm characterizing that accurately), or maybe I should say for the same article? (if that applies to article directory marketing)

When I use Goggle's KWTfor phrases between 2 to 4 words, some of the niche phrases are only getting a few hundred or a couple of thousand searches per month, I believe the logic is use multiple KW phrases so that "combined" they total at least "10,000" searches per month if #'s are low,...

(10k is what I've read that is a good number of monthly searches with low competition serps or pr ranking for getting a reasonable amount of traffic or ranking for those kw's)

if true, any suggestions on "implementation" of these "multiple" phrases within a given article?
( I have some confusion about what may seem an obvious question. I'm trying to understand the "mix" or balance of this KW strategy

Personally, I would focus on one keyword (or keyword phrase) for an article, and then write other articles for the other keywords.
 
Your site can target multiple KW phrases and rank quite easily with the right strategy. Having sites that rank for multiple KWs are a great way to get a lot of coverage in the SERPs.

However, each piece of promotional content and your supporting sites like web 2.0 should target 1 KW phrase each.

so if I were currently focusing on "ranking" articles I place in directories, you don't feel that multiple KW's would work or have any value (specifically to get the article to rank) in that context?

So then the value of "multiple KW's" needs the collective nature of a "site" to handle it's complexity? or rather to marshal value from its uses?

Like I said, you should use your promotional content and supporting sites to target a single KW phrase. You will get better results.
 
Well using key phrases is for bringing your relevant keywords soon in serp's but not like use many of them . better is to hire some SEO adviser to select keywords relevant to your website.
 
As Yukinari said target one keyword for articles or web 2.0 (promotional) and multiple keyword for your site... You can still use LSI for your article of you planning to rank them also... I have done it with good success... Keep 80% main keyword for secondary layer...

You don't need to waste money on a SEO adviser. Google will tell you everything you need to know if you pay attention.

Great catch. I forgot to mention LSI and how great it is for rankings, so thanks for bringing that up.
 
I am going to take a crack at answering you question, though I feel there might be a little confusion in the way that you are asking it, or I don't totally understand the question.

Anyways, here is my reply. I just hope that it helps you a little.

For your site, you will be trying to rank for the main keyword, which hopefully is in your domain. Your <h1>, title, and description of your home page should be this keyword. Then you would point links from web 2.0 properties and your articles with the keyword as anchor text back to the main "home" page of your website. Also I have found that linking on your website to your home page with the keyword helps. So on the main page instead of using "home" use your keyword to link to the page.

Then for the other phrases that you are trying to target you would build subdomains for them so you would have www.yourdomain.com/second-keyword then /third-keyword, etc.

Now you will build backlinks with your articles and web 2.0 properties back to the /second-keyword page and link to that page with the anchor text "second-keyword" so that the search engine knows that the page should be ranked for the second keyword.

On this /second-keyword page you should also use the proper <h1>, title, description and keywords to contain the second keyword that you are trying to rank for.

I hope that makes sense to you and helps you to understand a little better.

But how about if you have wordpress blog. It should have atleast 5 posts on front page too with link to the post. I don't know if any of you uses plugin to make it not show the whole post. But most of my websites rank multiple keywords with the home page, but there are also some other pages ranking. So my question is. If you want to rank for more longtail keywords, Are you better linking of to home page or the sub pages.
