Multiple Google local business listings

Does Google penalize you if you have multiple Google local business listings? I'm currently working with a company that wants me to delete my own local listings so it doesn't interfere with one they're going to create for me. Is that true? If so, what makes it a duplicate listing? What if I make a fake address, different telephone number and website would that make them distinct in Google's eyes?

Not quite sure if Google will penalize them, but someone in my area has multiple listing with "cityname,keyword" as their listing title in multiple cities in the area. I believe thay have different phone numbers but the same url.

They have been doing this for a while, so even if they're eventually caught, they have made plenty of cash by now, because they are in the 7 box for all of the neighboring cities.

No, they even allow a bulk upload tool..

However multiple listings on the same address and phone number is not such a good plan in my opinion anyway

I guess they're afraid it's going to be a duplicate - which means problems.

any listing with the same tel, address and web will be merged into one, and you will lose the opportunity for multiple titles such as city1 widget, city2 widget etc. because they will all be attached to the title(company name) that has more citations, content, reviews, etc.

so they are right in that you should either delete it or change the info within it so nothing is the same as the one theyre creating for you.

if youre already listed, why are you hiring someone to do it for you? and what are they promising to do?

True, but I'm not sure that is true for the web address. There are a few companies that have their URL in multiple listings and have been doing this for a while.

Yeh from what I believe each listing needs a seperate address and maybe phone number.
