I have a client who I'm currently building a website for. I bought two domain names for him, because he wanted one but then he decided to go with another. He wants to know if he can buy 5 domains for the 5 keywords that he wants to rank for, and have each domain name pointed to just the one URL and be ranked for each keyword because he has the domain for each keyword phrase.

E.g. he currently has www.neighbourhoodbusiness.com and www.citybusiness.com. Neighbourhoodbusiness.com is the one that is the main domain. If he has citybusiness.com and statebusiness.com, will he rank easily for citybusiness.com and statebusiness.com and 'city business' and 'state business' are the keywords he wants to rank for, will he be on the first page of Google for those exact match keywords?

Even if you have an EMD, you still have to work for the rankings (although ranking the keyword for the EMD) is a lot easier if you know what you are doing.

When you say each domain will be "pointed", do you mean a 301 redirect or do you mean a link to the main site?

With having multiple domains, it means you have a lot more sites to do SEO on and have to pay for more registrations plus spend more time to maintain them. To be honest, I'd prefer talking the client into getting a brand name and making that rank for everything he wants whether neighborhood, city or state.

Exactly, go for a single site and create Authority , it is much needed that you focus on creating strategic content as well . Do SEO for the site consciously and if your client has some good money to spend around, use PBN to rank his site.

Can you tell more about PBN?
Martin, PBN is a term related to content marketing, which means create a Private network of blogs to spread quality content about your services and other things. You can purchase domains relevant to your business keywords and spread relevant content on them. Peoples these days creating such private blog network using wordpress, joomla and other easy to use platforms. Search Google for " private blog network " .

I hope its helpful.

EMD will help you far less than you think. Go for a single authority website.

Instead of having to build a whole entity of sites aimed for a certain keyword, why not just stand for one and build authority
to it.

Check on google for high/medium niche and keywords and you will see that Authority sites are ranking rather that emd.Follow the advice of most members here and create one big authority site by updating unique content daily

All the extra domains would be a 301 redirect to the main website. There would only be one website built, not e.g. one for each domain.
