Multiple domains for one entity? Any use??

Hey guys,

We have started a new web development and bought multiple domains a total of 8, 1 being the main brand others related to the niche. We had planned to use the other 7 as squeeze pages redirecting to the main site. Is this effective. Our current web developer is suggesting only using 3. Another colleague says that we bought the domains we might as well put them to use and it wont hurt, we actually will benefit from the back links?

I think you will find varying opinions depending on who you ask. Some say that buying up TLDs that are related to the niche or brand and redirecting or forwarding them to one main site is fine and perfectely legitimate because it involves protecting a brand name. I have heard others say that it puts up a red flag and (especially if domains are not relevant to each other) can end up harming the main domain as far as SEO goes.

I have not been able to find conclusive proof anywhere of either result. Personally, (and this is just my opinion), I am in the camp that thinks redirecting multiple TLD's creates a poor user experience. You can still buy domains and park them to protect a brand without redirecting them to another domain. To my mind, there is a difference between filling an SERP with a bunch of domains that all redirect to the same place and protecting a brand.

At any rate, this sounds like a good opportunity to create a case study. Perhaps you could try it, record your results and come back to BHW in a few months to report on how you were (or were not) successful making this work. I would love to see some data on this. On another note, I think the backlinking opportunity would provide you marginal if no benefit because those other domains wouldn't really be linked to your site, they would be redirected to it and if they don't have content in the first place, they can't really hold that much authority.

so these are not various TLD's using the brand name.... just domain names with keywords relevant to your niche?

Build a blog network with all of these... just be sure to use domain privacy. Rank them, link to your site.... your site ranks higher. You can also capture leads and convert directly on all these properties. Just target them for different keywords and you have multiple properties that will 1) Drive Rankings for your main site, and 2) Act as traffic siphons.

Domains are cheap, just because you bought them does not mean you should use them. Only use them if they fit into your plan.

You can redirect them to your money site.

If you want to link to your money site, you'll need to put them on on separate hosting plans which will cost money, if you're not earning from that expense, you shouldn't do it.

This was the plan, but if you read the below quote he says all domains need to be on different hosting? So google checks the server not just domain?

Really I didnt know , so basically if the domains are on the same server the backlinks wont even count??

if your domains are on the same IP they will not count in google's eyes..

I have a $25 hosting plan, and pay another $10 to get enough ip's so that each website has its own ip.

I also got whois protection on all but one website.

I have whois protection on them all. I have the main on its own IP. But the rest all on the same?
