We've got a client with multiple locations across the United States and Canada, some only 10-15 minutes from one another.

They've recently been consolidating their microsites and are asking us to combine two separate market sites into a single site. The two locations, (Fredrericksburg, VA and Dale City, VA) are about 30 miles apart.

My question is, shouldn't each of these locations have an individual microsite with a unique URL in order to rank properly for both markets?

If we consolidate both websites into a single location microsite but update the copy everywhere on the site to say "xxxx restaurant of Fredericksburg and Dale City" that won't help at all, right?

I appreciate any insight you can share.

If those two have their own individual NAP then best to leave those site alone. It would be easier to rank especially to get on the G Map.
