The developers at Mozilla who work on the email client Thunderbird have been more or less secretly working on a couple of new projects that they have now presented to the world .

First up is Thundermail, an upcoming email service that will challenge Gmail and Outlook. The service is being developed as open source by Mozilla and dedicated developers around the world. It is based on the open email server Stalwart, and Mozilla has been working with the developers on that project for some time to expand its functionality. Among other things, Mozilla wants to add support for calendars and contacts as soon as possible.

Those interested can register their interest in joining the beta test at thundermail.com , but there is currently no set date for when the service will open. Accounts on the service will receive addresses with the domains thundermail.com or tb.pro.

At the same time, Mozilla is developing a number of advanced features for Thunderbird, collectively known as Thunderbird Pro. These include a reworked version of Firefox Send, now called Thunderbird Send, which can be used to send large files, an AI-based assistant called Thunderbird Assist, and Thunderbird Appointment, which helps users find common gaps in their calendar.

Thunderbird Assist is being developed together with Flower AI and Mozilla writes that the service uses Nvidia's "confidential compute" to protect user privacy, comparing it to Apple's Private Cloud Compute.

Thunderbird Pro features will initially be free for developers who contribute to the Thunderbird project, but will cost a penny for everyone else. There may be free versions in the future, but Mozilla says that a small fee is a good way to reduce fraudulent use of services like these.
