Moving Up to VPS

Well, things have grown to the point that I can't keep just using my Hostgator baby croc account any more (I have 2 of them)...

I'm going to move up to a VPS account. I've got too many sites, and too many files, so I need to move to something more...

Anyone have any tips, or gotchas on what to look out for?

From what I can tell all of my sites should be moved over on the back end by Hostgator without much of a problem, but I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with this and had any problems that I might be able to avoid...

Thanks all... This is the kind of problem I don't mind having, too much growth :D...

*This took 20 tries to post; kept getting a message about a moderation system. I had to cut down alot since I was trying to figure out which words were triggering it. The post quality has taken a hit because of this, but I hope you understand*

I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly, but I think you're under the impression that your old host is going to move your files over? That's quite strange, as usually it's the new host that will do that for you.

Something some quick notes:

-- Ask the potential new host to divulge how many nodes/containers they put on each server.
-- Review their SLA and make sure you know the procedures and terms.
-- Try to avoid resellers. Do some digging and make sure you're dealing with the company that has access to the physical 53rvers.
-- Get guaranteed RAM for your account. Basically the h0st can assign your container a certain amount of RAM that's guaranteed (i.e. not shared with other accounts).

Hope that gets the discussion going.

Shoot me a PM, I would love to help you out with this and put all your fears at ease, dont trust just anyone moving your websites thats your livelihood, let people who actually know what their doing it, and not just a big company that will hire any idiot off the street
 
I chatted with the Hostgator rep, and their policy is that as long as you are moving up a plan, they can move your stuff for you.

I will look into the other things. One big question I have is what are nodes? I know on my current account I am over on what they want me to have, but I have no idea what that really means.

I believe you are talking about "inodes" inodes are the total numbers of files in your hosting account, nodes on the other hand are the host dedicated servers that host VPS's on them.
 
Make sure you know the technicalities of how a VPS works. You can play with a demo accounts on some hosts.

I see too many people buying a VPS and then asking, "what now?"

Yup, that's basically me. I need to move up because my sites are out growing what the baby croc shared hosting can do, so I need to find a place for them to grow some more. But at the same time I don't now if VPS is going to be just too much.

I really just need expanded hosting that will allow me to keep building my sites without having to worry about server side management...

Anyone have ideas on that?
 
Going to bookmark this as I am interested as well. Getting to the point that I may have to do this as well.

Thats what hostwinds is all about, helping people get their VPS's setup beautifully and then you can pretty much treat it like a SUPER shared hosting account

Ah, so you want to stick with Hostgator. I didn't know they offered VPS plans; now I understand.

And yes, spydure is right. Sorry I didn't clarify: nodes are the various servers that contain VPS accounts. VPS accounts are technically "containers." If you want to learn more (or just bored), look up parallels virtuozzo product.

Anyway another word of caution regarding this thread: honestly my opinion is that if you don't need a VPS plan, I wouldn't go with one. If you really do need one, definitely stick with a host that will manage your VPS. Fully utilizing your VPS requires technical skills or alot of research. Maybe someone on BHW can set you up, but just keep in mind there are many more options when you're fully in charge of your container.
 
upgrade to a higher plan on hostgator and they will help you move everything and i dont think you would have to worry about it.
the issue with having too many options to chose from is that you must be technically savvy to understand this and figure out whats the best settin for you. If you are not a technical guy or have a friend who will help you with it and server management your screwed.

my personal opinion- upgrade on hostgator call it a day :-)

Same here, shared look like not handle my site anymore, but with VPS, my knowledge is zero.
 
I think I'm actually going to move to a reseller account. This seems to be more along the lines of what I need. I just need to get a few more answers about if I can build new accounts for myself without having to be charged for additional accounts.
 
How many sites do you have? Having a reseller account won't help if your sites are so popular that you need dedicated space. Hostgator will still disable the account under your reseller account that is causing detriment (using too many resources) on the server. I know this from experience. Also, do not try to host all of the sites you had on shared hosting on your VPS. Your sites will forever be down.
 
has anyone tried eleven2 cloud hosting, it seems that if you go with VPS hosting you should go with them or hostwinds, because the prices are so reasonable.
 
Futurehosting.com has been a solid provider for me. Great prices and fantastic tech support (answer back all my issues typically 15-20 minutes)
