Moving to the UK - any tips?

I'd probably suggest going to the mainland. Holland is pretty good with job opportunities all over the west, and also most bigger German cities would be good. London is simply way to expensive, and outside of London the job situation is not the best.

I can only get a working visa for the UK.

What about something with long sleeves? Or would a 'wife beater' do the job?

To everyone saying it's expensive: I'm moving from Australia and the part of Australia that I live is a big tourist area and very expensive. People have said its only slightly more expensive in London that it is here for transport, and food. Apparently accomodation is much more expensive in London.

I live like 250 miles away from London:

1,000 rent/utilities/council tax (2 bedrooms)
150/week on food/beer (you can definitely go cheaper here)
transport is expensive
I hate TV license
going out means spending quite a lot (it depends again, I personally drink quite a lot of beer and that can get rather expensive)

1 GBP is almost 2 AUD, prices above are GBP.

edit: almost forgot, fuck this weather

Why not? I heard it's a great place with friendly people and all that stuff some people dream of.

NZ is a very small place country. The reason for moving to the UK is to have easy access to the rest of Europe. If I was to move to NZ, the only place I'd have easy access to is Australia.

There's a couple of useful free magazines issued in London that are written by and for our Antipodean visitors. Check out the websites of TNT Magazine and Australian Times. First one is dot com, 2nd one is dot co dot uk. Hope that helps some more.

They dont, i think some people are just surprised and don't understand why you would come to the UK lol. I mean theres a lot of people from the UK moving to Australia for a better life.

Why? Do the English hate Australian tourists?

I about shit my pants when I was watching a BBC program about subway hoppers in London and they stated the average fare was around 8 pounds (I can't make the funny little scribbly mark). Hell you can get around anywhere in the Seoul Korea (4th largest city in the world) greater metropolitan area for under $1. And Seoul is not cheap either.

Don't watch TV to avoid propaganda that's rampant here.
Move to the South if you can as Nort-West England is very rainy and the weather is depressing.
You can't go wrong with Morrison's dounuts, that's for sure.
Try to be active while you're here or you'll put a lot of KG-s. I've been here for almost 4 years and I've put on 10kgs, fuck it.
I'm lazy as shit because of weather makes me not want to move my butt outside the house.
People are rather friendly. The country's full of Central-Europeans, which the British call Eastern-Europeans. Guess everybody east of them is eastern.
You'll find many dumb and fat fucks around here. The general populace seems to be your tipycal consumer and 9-5 operative.
Other than that, they love money as much as anybody. Oh, and the drinks are expensive in pubs(read inns, taverns or clubs).
There are a lot of Middle-Eastern, Indian and Pakistani immigrants. Many of these are Muslim.
They've got a good knack for business and love to see Europeans work for them for peanuts.
I haven't met any religious nuts so far, but most of these migrants are practising their faith.
In my experience, a lot of these teenagers are drug-addicts and look like they'll never grow up.
Our neighbour kid for example yesterday had some fucking mind-blowing event and screamed for hours. I'm talking about a 18-20 year old kid. The kid hit the wall like mad and had some crazy shit laughing period, like someone from Lunaticland. In the evening, her mother ordered the cops out and had the kid taken away from here, lol. I believe he's back now.

haha, bestanswer.eu :)

London is quiet diverse city in the world. Nothing is impossible, come and try your luck. :)

There is some narrow views on this thread.

You will have a great time, there are loads of antipodeans head to London and thrive (bloody hell the whole backpackers chain started from those very people)

In terms of cost I have a mate emigrated from London to Melbourne and found it more expensive, so cost is relative.

There are loads of things to do in the UK whether your outdoors or even just want to see the place. I've lived in London and loved it, Edinburgh, loved it, Glasgow and Belfast loved it. It is all new and exciting, so have an awesome time, and see as much as you can in your two years.

get a map and some darts, every weekend throw a dart at the map and go. You will only regret not doing it.

P.s. a train ticket round Europe can start at London Waterloo station.

haha I can see why people might think that. Australia is a great place to live but there is a whole world out there to explore too.

Good luck with the move. Remember anything like this has hidden cost so go loaded for bear.

Are you racist? You'll need to learn to be racist to fit in.
