I just read an article that says wordpress is requiring sites to use HTTPS and purchase an SSL certificate in 2017.

Does this mean that my wordpress site will stop working if I don't comply? Also, what are the SEO ranking hits/improvements I'll see if I do make the switch?

As far as I know that is bullcrap but I might be wrong but there are like millions of WP websites without a certificate.

I have it standard on all my WP sites, free once OFC either from Cpanel (powered by Comodo) or Let's Encrypt.

Check out A2hosting.com. I had to move from my previous hosting company for a variety of reason, mostly because their support sucked but I've found that A2 is very good, offers free SSL certificates through Let's Encrypt and it's done automatically for all domains. Further, they automatically renew the certificates which expire every 90 days. I couldn't find another reputable hosting company which supported Let's encrypt like these guys and they have fantastic customer services to boot. My 2 cents.
