Anyone have any experience with this? I have a blog on wordpress.com with a fair amount of posts and links I want to keep and move over to wordpress.org so I can actually do things with the site. None of the upgrade options I see will let me do this. The $99/year option through wordpress.com doesnt even allow you to use Google analytics on your site. Im not sure if i should be selecting the domain purchasing option for $18/year but I think that just changes the name?

Another option i looked up is to export the data and import into a new wordpress installation. Would this allow me to keep the name and metrics though? which would be the whole point of moving this

Would be grateful for any suggestions, thanks :)

What do you mean by moving over to wordpress.org? What you can do is register a domain, buy hosting for it, install WP on it, and then you move your blog over. Or you can keep your blog on wordpress.com but host it on a domain instead.

If the reason that you want to do is because you want the freedom to do whatever the hell you want with your wordpress installation, then just buy a domain/hosting, get WP on it and transfer your data over.

The address will change from xyz.wordpress.com to yourdomain.com. As for the name of the blog, everything will stay the same. The important thing you need to consider is the SEO implications. How old is your blog?Because if there are a great many links pointing to the old address, you'll have to get that sorted out.

This is what im asking, I want to be able to keep all the links and metrics associated with the current blog. Its a few years old so it has some good links on it but im not sure how to transfer it to my own wordpress installation

you can loose your traffic with a single mistake.

I can help you with site structures and other things. pm me, if you need any help.

1. Buy Site Redirect upgrade on wordpress.com
2. Buy custom domain/hosting and set up WP from wordpress.org
3. Set up site redirect on wordpress.com to work with your domain
4. Transfer content over to your new blog
5. Make sure that your new permalink structure is the same as the old one

You're going to take a SEO hit for 3-6 months but then you should be fine.

Anything else?

^ This

We've developed about 400 WP Sites and transferred a similar number of them, though usually from host to host, not WPcom/org to host.
Those steps should have you covered.
