I want to move my website domain to a new domain because the old domain is long and hard to remember. The monthly visits are around 150 per month from Google, as I did not focus on SEO on this site, but it has strong backlinks and authority. Now I want to work more on this site and I expect moving it to a new short domain will be good, but I do not want to lose the authority of the old site. What is your advice? Thank you for the help.

Optimize your content with relevant keywords and make sure titles, headers, and meta descriptions are SEO-friendly.
Improve site speed, mobile responsiveness, and user experience, as these factors also impact rankings.
Build new backlinks for the new domain to further boost its authority.

1. set up 301 redirects from all old pages to their exact counterparts on the new domain: old-domain.com/about/ -> new-domain.com/about/, and so on

2. add both domains to GSC and use the change of address tool to notify google about the move from old-domain.com to new-domain.com

3. renew old-domain.com for at least 1 year so you don’t lose it after expiration. google recommends keeping 301 redirects active for at least a year

Set up 301 redirects from every old URL to the new one, and submit a Change of Address in Google Search Console. Make sure the new domain is live, with SSL and matching page structures. Update internal links and reach out to key sites linking to you to update their links.

Hello, I hope my reply can help you relieve your worries.

Simple suggestions for migrating domains and retaining SEO authority:

301 redirect:

Permanently redirect (301) all pages on the old domain to the corresponding pages on the new domain, transferring more than 90% of the authority.

Plugins (such as Redirection) or server configuration (such as Nginx rules) are used to achieve this.

Submit Google updates:

Submit a domain change request in Google Search Console to speed up index transfer.

Backlink repair:

Contact high-authority backlink websites to update links to the new domain (especially authoritative backlinks).

Dual domain name parallel:

Retain the old domain for at least 1 year to prevent traffic loss.

Note:

The new domain name should be as short and branded as possible;

The content/structure should be consistent and avoid changing the URL path.

Effect: After 3-6 months, the new domain name will inherit most of the authority.

Ensure you set up the 301 redirect correctly, and make sure to update Google Search Console. Also, continue building backlinks to the new domain to ensure search engines take notice.
