Most efficient way to learn a new language?

Hey there!

I speak 4 languages (not perfect) but I'd like to learn some new languages on my own. Does anyone now of the most time efficient way to do this? It has to be something I can study at home .. So traveling to the country isn't an option.

Also: I'm willing to spend money on it but not crazy amounts.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Read the book called "Fluent Forever". It explanes everything.

Basically, it's a book on how to learn a language with flashcards very effectively.

I've used the techniques mentioned in that book and found it very useful. They helped me advance my french A LOT!

start by watching cartoons (kids tend to be simplified so its easier to get the basics) or shows in that language, then if you are a bit of a gamer play a story based game set in that language (with subs turned on if needed).
learn shit while keeping yourself entertained.
 
My momma always said... you wanna learn a language... do it in the bed!!!! if you see what i mean...
 
Watch tons of movies and shows in that language. Before you know i, I kid you not, you will begin to have dreams of people sounding as if and at some parts are speaking that language.
 
Watching movies and reading books will be a better way to learn the languages and keep practice.
 
DuoLingo and Memrise are excellent (and free) learning platforms - my preferred one is DuoLingo, although they removed verb conjugations from exercises few months ago (now they can be found only in 'Words' section - and this was such a great feature :( ).

Anyway, to learn a language, you must use it as often as possible - for example, I learn for example Italian and Spanish (very similar languages) using English, Spanish and Italian interfaces, or French using German and other interfaces. Interesting, Germans don't like Italian language, at least not on DuoLingo :)

Anyway, you can order language flashcards from Amazon (grammar guides/books are also highly recommended) and play with them whenever you have time (watching sports on TV, for example). Or if you are in IM and you are doing some research of your niche, do research in foreign language too and even try to translate few articles in English - after translating them, add some more content and you have original article ready to be used on your own site :)

Don't forget songs - try to find a song that you like in a foreign language, find the lyrics and translation, learn a song, grammar, words etc from that song and then move forward...

Has any even mentioned spending time in another country. You soon get the hang of it when you have friends who live and speak the language.

OP: get a girlfriend in your target language. teach each other.
 
to learn the language u need to use it frequent. go stay in that country and spend a year or so... you will learn it even without knowing it.
 
Duolingo worked for me...I'm learning French on it. It has a good user interface too.
 
As others said, books, movies, children's cartoons, and women/men are a good way to learn.

Immersing yourself in the country helps as well, but nothing quite like a good friend or lover that is patient and willing to teach you the language.

Studying whatever language in college isn't a bad idea if you want to, it's expensive in some countries but worth it sometimes after all.
 
The most effective way to learn a language is being around it 24/7. books, music, telly, etc...
 
Try the Michel Thomas Method or the Pimsleur Language Program. I like them both! :)
