Most Backlinks Will Kill Your Website

1 - The more backlinks you create, the more rankings you lose. Forget using generic anchor test as the recent Google update can now catch the trend and your website would be penalized.

No shit. Or maybe the more shitty links you create in a brainless way the more you sink. Links are the king and you need to keep building them but you have to mimic natural patterns.

2 - Public blog networks will now die much quicker because of the huge footprints.

They always sucked. It was just a matter of time.

3 - Web 2.0 backlinks are slowly losing ranking power and by the next few months most would be worthless.

No they're not. Again people leave massive footprints because they don't know shit about how to build a web 2.0 network and grow it. They work great if you do it right.

4 - Article directories cannot be relied upon as backlink sources. Google mostly would ignore the links, indexed or not.

You can't rely on a bunch of 5yo kids to help you build a house but you can rely on them to bring a glass of water to the thirsty workers. Again nothing wrong with article directories, just that most people dont use them effectively.

About what works... what about:
1. D0f0llow blog comments on moderated blogs (manual)
2. Forum posts (xrumer or manual) on relevant threads.
3. Guest posts
4. Link renting/buying on related sites that normally don't sell links.
5. Multi-way link exchange partnerships with complementary sites.
6. Viral posts + social bookmark engineering (e.g. digg/reddit/stumbleupon front-page)
7. Contests and giveaways requiring FB like, retweet or something else to enroll.
8. Badges, awards and reviews to product X and notify manufacturer and let him know it's ok to use the graphic you provide to him for the badge and link to your review page.
9. Mega resources lists that people will naturally refer/link to
10. Truly private link networks without using crappy SEO hosts and leaving footprints - read my threads: How to build a link network of support sites and Link networks - interlinking
11. Social engineering to convince nice people to give you a link. If you think it's impossible you're targeting the wrong people or not doing the social engineering part well.
12. Join huge sites as an editor. Hire somebody full time to work as an editor for them if lots of work is required. What would you be able to do as an editor for About.com or cNet.com ???

I could spit out methods for solid links all day long. Like I'd literally invent them on the fly and they would all work. Problem is they all require actual manual work and/or investment in time and money. Most people want to rank #1 in google for "weight loss" with $15 and 1h/day work. That's just not possible.

Not sure if this gives any insight into web 2.0s today but I ranked a web 2.0 for a client case study with medium competition keyword, started on page 4 of Google for the keyword just with on page seo work done, and after 1 week of back linking reached page 1.

I believe the usual strategies are still working the same.

Here are two in-depth videos by Dori Friend with extensive testing regarding links. I haven't finished
watching the first video, but it's excellent and covers the recent changes. There are some
suprising results with backlink testing. Note "branding" backlinks where it will be your "brand"
followed by the anchor link. You'll want, what she calls, "onezy, tuezie" to make Google happy.
That will be some anchor text only one or two people have used. In other words, you want
to have a mix of what a population of people will use that appears normal.

Another thing covered in video 1, are links from de-indexed sites, and that tests show the links
still have "juice". These are worth watching. Dori Friend and friends are knowledgeable.

I cant imagine but we are driving around 200 backlinks daily so i guess we need to takecare of this situation and OP thanks for the tips.

I cannot agree with your prediction on backlinks. You need to learn how to use them properly. There are certain rules to do things. If you cannot do it properly, then high quality backlinks cannot give you nothing but frustration.

Thanks for the resource, but this is the same info you will find here without the marketing of $150/mo link building services.

This is completely contrary to my experiences. Building backlinks still work absolutely fine and dandy. I don't understand the web 2.0 links being devalued especially - not from my experience! Link diversity blasts with 20+ anchor links, mostly generic, has saved plenty of my sites from the grips of Google. And bookmarking? Please. Especially in easy niches this will rank alone.

Super confused by all of this and people going "SPEAKS THE TRUTH". Yeah, maybe if you're targeting a loan keyword in the USA!

There are some TRULY CLUELESS statements being made in this thread.

The main one about links not working is a big one. That's absolutely hilarious.

Another one about neg seo not working is hilarious too. Just do a search in here and you'll see plenty of talk about it, both from victims and perps. You can choose not to believe but it doesn't change reality.

The BIGGEST thing that was said by the OP that IS 100% true is the fact that there is really ZERO consistency by google right now.

Same exact linking can work for one site/page and not for another. NO RHYME or REASON at all. However, it doesn't mean nothing works. It more or less means you have to increase the number of sites/pages you make to target your keywords. Expect a certain percentage to just go nowhere in a hurry. Keep the winners and move on...

And HOPE that none of your competitors nuke you...because YEAH, it isn't hard to do these days...

Good luck everyone,
Con

It is amazing how people miss the gist of the post. Just as a reminder:

If you rank creating backlinks, good for you but do not be shocked when you wake up one day to find your website missing from the serps

Well crafted personal blog networks will get you great results. If you can create blog networks to target just your niche (health, finance, SEO etc ) then you would do fine.

The ranking perimeters will become known eventually, but right now the ranking massacre continues on a massive scale.

Personally, i care not if you agree with my observations as we humans are like herds anyway following the masses to the slaughter house.

Those with eyes can see these google algorithmic updates is a huge re-evaluation of what qualifies as legitimate SEO.

The huge increase in old domains for sale is just a small sample as to what is coming. Google is determined to reduce organic rankings as a profitable business model. It is like the landlord evicting squatters as a way to boost rental income (ADWORDS)

Well I can either build no backlinks and get no ranking or build massive backlinks and get massive rankings, with the risk of loosing them. So what? That is why you have tons of sites. I really doubt all of them will get wiped out.

With your thinking it seems the option is to either sit around and bang our butts or suck googles dick with adwords. Sorry I dont like weewees

There is some truth to the OPs assessment as negative SEO is indeed working from backlinking campaigns waged against competitors. I look for this trend to morph into something that devalues backlinks as a search signal or forces Google to roll back to a more reasonable approach where they merely do not count the value of backlinks. Penalizing sites for backlinks is merely a strategy to deal with a flawed algorithm that can't distinguish quality from garbage. Oddly enough, my Penguin slapped websites are still converting rather well with traffic from Bing/Yahoo. Yes, they are still profitable which means I won't destroy these sites to appease someone that plays with stuffed animals all day long.

Your simply justifying why you are either giving up or resorting to adwords. Either way good for you. The less links people build the more opportunities I have.

Madoctopus is right. It depends on what links we build and how we are building them. This is a game yes. It is risky yes. But to not build links means to give up. Now bow down to Google and start handing over your cash

You make very good point man, especially with penguin these days.

Most people not only screw up making links today, but screwed up making links in the past. That why they have unnatural link warnings from Google. You know? So they need to use your guide and remove these kind of backlinks from their profile.

That the only way to bounce out of Google penalties is to clean up links AND show Google that they are doing this, you know?

You could also use services like linkdelete.com to clean up those links.

One last thing to remember is that you need to build good quality links, not garbage links in the future. find high pr sites and comment on them (only low obl), guest blog, do stuff like that will make sure you don't have problems down the road.

Isn't it just easier to blast the shit out of competitor sites instead of trying to figure out an algorithm that has hormonal and unpredictable fits? Then as competitors sift through thousands upon thousands of crappy links in their failed attempt to remove them, that would free up some time to build quality links between bank deposits. We have the tools and we can certainly choose how to use them. :)

Unfortunately many people are resorting to this technique to knock off competition. I am sure you realize by now Google just does not care who created the backlinks as the penalties get applied.

What people are missing is that Google realizes people are making billions of dollars from organic results and they want to turn them into adwords buyers. Complain all you want, they own the platform and they're determined to monetize the traffic.

A trend you would soon see is that your adwords position would also give you some organic rankings. Have you noticed some heavy keywords have paid and organic results blended in. A perfect example is Amazon. They spend tens of millions of dollars on adwords and are rewarded with millions of top organic search rankings.

Website owners cannot control the amount of backlinks their website gets so its hard to agree on your statement. Maybe your statement applies to websites doing unnatural backlinking

Incoming links are one of the two most important factors impacting small business seo (the other thing is onsite link metrics).

What are backlinks, anyway?

Backlinks are links from other sites that are directed to your website. Google estimates your Pagerank partly by evaluating the number and quality of your backlinks.
Google is on a never-ending search for quality content. It counts each backlink as a ?vote? for your content. The more votes, the better your Pagerank.
How do you get more backlinks? First, create high quality content that people want to share. It is the best long-term strategy. Good content will endure Google updates better than any other factor.

There are some additional tactics you might consider to help speed the acquisition of backlinks:

Reciprocal Linking- approach websites in your industry or related industries to see if they would be interested in reciprocal linking with your site. This is also known as a link exchange. Be careful, though. The links must be pertinent. If you link your dog-training site to a car wash site, it will actually hurt you.

Anchor Text- the actual highlighted words in a hyperlink are known as the anchor text. Google looks at the anchor text of incoming links to help it determine what a site is about. If every incoming link to your dog-training site has the anchor text ?dog training,? Google sees a consistent pattern and will boost your site in the search results for the phrase ?dog training.? The trick is to get that actual hyperlink phrase you want on most or all of your incoming links.
Quality content drives the web. People get on the internet for many reasons but mostly to find answers to a problem. When you provide in depth information that helps people, you are going a long way to increase backlinks and build your Pagerank. And that can only help your small business seo.

Note: usage of anchor text is good to rank but avoid using same keyword in anchor text

Hey Abby, it looks like you copied a 2011 blog post from here.

Are you a bot or just a lamer?

One example disproves what I'm saying, but you don't need evidence to support what you're saying? And you call me hard-line?
By hard-lined, I mean you are making an absolute claim- a blanket statement. In order to disprove a blanket statement, it does take 1 example to the contrary. I am not going to share my exact linkbuilding strategy or websites here though, so you can take as you want- if you think I am making it up, then fine, I don't care- I am just saying linkbuilding can still work.
