How will the search engines react if 90% of a site's backlinks are images?

Nothing special, you will probably receive more traffic from google image if you put right anchor. From my point of view that is a backlink like any other.

i think it has a bit less weight than text backlinks but it's still good if you put you anchor text in the alt=""
