After having done some DA checks on expired domains, I have noticed that a lot of the high DA sites have a lot of indexed pages.

Based on this, I was wondering what would be worth pursuing, writing a few 300-500 word articles a day (meeting all the Yoast SEO requirements whilst writing), or writing 3-4 1000+ word articles a week?

By writing many decent quality short articles I would imagine that I could get more pages to be indexed, and as a result build authority?

I vote for larger items. This will allow you to put more words and also to dilute more easily. What is good to have more shit items that won't interest anyone?
Spend more time on each article, document yourself if necessary and offer a good summary to your readers who will spend more time on your page. In the end, isn't this the start of the Authority?

Everything you put out there has to be top notch. The number of pages indexed is not going to factor into your site's authority.

Focus on writing comprehensive well thought out posts that serve your readers.

I've written 1000 or more word articles at times at others of varying length.
I find posts of 500 or so words do just as well ranking wise as longer articles.
It's the quality of the article and how well it is optimsed that will determine how well it does in terms of pulling in visitors.
Others may have a different experience of course.

Quality always matters the most. So rather than focusing on nos. Pay more attention to the quality of your work. Search engines also look for valuable information... So better stay focused on proving helpful to your readers.

Make quality and unique articles using targeted keywords.

Then directing the distribution and traffic distribution channels.
Like fb ads and fanpage

Focus on quality of content and make it valuable to users, so it increases the stay time of users and can help gain natural links. Putting effort on a longer article with no informative content or interesting will not gain much benefit.

In SEO, content is always king, it is always better to write quality content instead of increasing volume, quality content will increase your audience and it will provide a better user experience.

3-500 word articles will only rank for low competition words with a fairly strong domain. But a weaker domain with better and longer content can come along and out rank you fairly easily.

Honestly I won't even put 500 word articles on my PBNs 7-800 words is my minimum even on PBNs.

i don't know what stops you from doing both of them at the same time

It has been proved that google is giving preference to long articles. Make sure your articles are of atleast 1500 words.

Google top 10 average word count is about 2000 word.

Quality AND quantity, It would be difficult to go round (and well) of a subject by being cramped in a small article. This poses for example a problem on a home like mine which acts as a Landing page ... Aside from blogs where you can put a large body of text, very often it is the visual aspect that prevails for marketing sites.

mix of both, long word for your money article, or main content, than you can use short one for infor / supportign article.
