More effective: Sending friend requests or messages?

What's more effective on getting people to check out your channel? Do people get a little notice when you send them a friend request like they do when they receive a message? (like the little number under the username)

Answer/info would be greatly appreciated.

A message linking them to your channel is probably the best idea. You can also add a video with an annotation linking them to your channel.
