Monetizing url shortner?

I've read here from a few people that its not a good idea to monetize a url shortner, can someone please explain why?

Because you are paid 5$ for 1000 US visits. You could monetize that traffic a lot better.

thanx for your reply, I mean setting up my own shortner and monetizing with adsense or display ads....

monetizing shortner may work but giving less revenue. if you have some good creativity and page appeal, it might work as secondary source. Everything is worth a try.

Linkmaster: I would completely agree with you on this point.

I've a plan to set-up this as well and already have bought a short domain "link.la". Everything is worth a try
