I'm a developer, and one of the sites I work on is a pretty popular / high traffic site. Is there anything I can do to monetize off of that traffic? I can't outright put my own links/content on the site because that would be too obvious, but I *could* add scripts/cookies/behind-the-scenes things and nobody would know or care about it.

Thinking I was being original I thought, what if I loaded my Amazon referral link in a 1x1 iframe and cookied everyone who passed through... then I googled and found out that's already old hat and a couple guys have gone to jail for it. I really don't understand how that could even be illegal, seems to me like at worst it's a violation of your affiliate agreement and they can ban you, or if they're really really mad sue you for the $$$, but how that's actually illegal i.e. jail beats me. But I digress.

Are there any other techniques / anything else I can do besides that one which *wouldn't* land me in jail?
