Mobile Website Creation

So I've been asked by a client to put together a mobile version of their website. I would have outsourced it but there's little left in the client and my budget.

Instead I'm gonna have a go myself as I'm pretty ok with stuff like this. Questions I have are:

Can it be done with software?
Any free alternatives?
Best paid alternatives?

Would like to get moving on this one asap so your thoughts are much appreciated.

hey sal, go have a look at my Summer of Money thread http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/making-money/301878-summer-money-10-000-3-months.html and on the second page, I posted a link there to one of the easier mobile website templates. you can pm me or post here if you have any specific questions you need help with, but that kit includes instructions on how to redirect the website and stuff.
