Mobile proxy vs. Residential proxy

Great question! While residential proxies and mobile proxies can both be used on mobile devices, they differ significantly in their setup, origin, and use cases. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Source of the Proxy
• Residential Proxies:
• Come from regular residential IP addresses assigned by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to household devices (e.g., computers, smart TVs).
• Simulate “home user” activity on the internet.
• Generally static or dynamic, depending on the service.
• Mobile Proxies:
• Operate on IP addresses assigned by mobile carriers (e.g., AT&T, Vodafone).
• Use 3G, 4G, or 5G networks.
• Designed for simulating activity from mobile devices like smartphones or tablets.

2. Level of Trust
• Residential Proxies:
• High trust for desktop or household-like internet activities.
• Less suited for platforms that distinguish mobile and desktop traffic (e.g., TikTok, Instagram).
• Mobile Proxies:
• Highest trust level, as mobile IPs are harder to flag and block due to NAT (Network Address Translation).
• Often used for high-sensitivity tasks like social media automation, account creation, or bypassing bans.

3. Setup on Mobile Devices
• Residential Proxy on a Mobile Device:
• Simply routing traffic through a residential proxy server while browsing from your mobile device.
• It doesn’t use the mobile network; it’s essentially a “residential IP on mobile hardware.”
• Mobile Proxy:
• Traffic is routed through a device actively using a 3G/4G/5G network.
• This gives it the characteristics of mobile network traffic (e.g., frequent IP rotations, mobile carrier tags, higher trust).

4. Use Cases
• Residential Proxies:
• General-purpose tasks like web scraping, accessing geo-restricted content, managing non-mobile-specific accounts.
• Suitable for platforms that don’t require mobile network traffic.
• Mobile Proxies:
• Ideal for platforms where mobile traffic is standard or mandatory (e.g., TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat).
• Used for tasks like account farming, social media automation, and ad verification.

5. Cost and Availability
• Residential Proxies:
• More affordable and widely available.
• Many providers offer static or rotating pools.
• Mobile Proxies:
• More expensive due to limited availability and higher trustworthiness.
• Often sold in smaller bandwidth packages or with pay-per-GB pricing.

Conclusion

If your goal involves creating or managing accounts on platforms like TikTok or Instagram, mobile proxies are your best bet for avoiding bans and maximizing trust. However, if cost is a concern and you don’t need mobile-specific traffic, high-quality residential proxies are a strong alternative.

What is the difference between proxy and general vpn?
A proxy changes your IP for specific tasks without encrypting your data. Proxies, especially mobile, and residential, are trusted more by websites since their IPs come from real users. Conversely, a VPN encrypts all your internet traffic and changes your IP, offering better privacy. However, VPN IPs can sometimes be blocked because many people use them and might seem suspicious.

I understood at once because you explained it so easily. Thank you very much.

Well, there is a reason why mobile proxies are more expensive. Residential isps are limited compared to the amount of carriers available for phones. But, this totally depends on your task. For most use cases residential is already really really good.

most people answered in detail, but I see one key difference being missed. Whatever use you have, mobile proxy is the one which can never be 100% detected or 100% banned. Unlike residential or datacenter. Because mobile proxies are used by mobile carriers and they use CGNAT technology which simply means 50-150 users share same IP. So say you are spamming tiktok or instagram. Your accounts will blend in with real people who are on their phones actually using it normally. And IG/TikTok can't ban that ip or blacklist it, since it will be churned through an entire country which is how european mobile carriers work. Each time a proxy is rotated, you will get assigned a new IP from the entire country geo wise. So basically you are entirely undetectable. Unless you go crazy and spam 30+ accounts on the same thing, then the service may flag the IP as more risky and get you rekt more frequently. But mobile IPs will never get banned due to this reason. Residential and datacenter if spammed too much will get flagged eventually and the flag will stay forever, since they are fixed (not forever forever, but you know what I mean)
how did you realize this

Even if you use a residential proxy on your phone, it’s still just a residential IP. Mobile proxies are different because they use real 4G/5G carrier IPs. So the main difference is the network the IP comes from, not the device you’re using.
