Hi all. I've been reading your forums for a long time, never posted though.

A few friends and I are in the process of setting up an MMORPG. Our past project (on which we were stupid enough not to monetize) had over 300k users in a little over a year we were running it.

Do you have any ideas as to how to monetize on the project? We were thinking of putting CPA instead of membership to each user on a monthly basis, once we've set up enough large user base.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks :)

there are lots of ways to monetize..i would focus on building up a huge user base first than either start charging for premium content or make everything free but start selling in game currency to your users in the guise of chinese gold farmers. Ban everyone else who does that and monopolize that market.

Donation system. i got 6 figures with the donation system. But if you wanna think outside the box, you can use CPA.

But, as someone said, CPA would make the content free to users, but again, earn us money, which would make both sides happy.

not really... not all CPA is free for your users. About 1% of the gamers are more than happy to pay for your items.

Also you can sell email list, email blasts, advertisement places, etc. See your PM.

I thought about doing this, never could find the right program to get it started. (care to give advice on what to use?)

But I would look at the big guys and see what they are doing and do it cheaper.

Donations is good or you can offer premium "upgrades" for a small price.

I belive it is pretty self explanatory. Make people complete CPA offers for ingame currency premium membership..... Making people have to complete the surveys will not make the game popular.

Also remember to make a site with lots of good content (Guides....) and advertise it a lot in the game. Then put adsense on it

I was in the exact same situation as lewi.. Getting back into it now. I think donations via paypal and phone for ingame items/money is the best way.

I was thinking about trying cpa leads virtual currency thing -anyone here have experience with it?

Make the MMORPG free in general to play, however they have the option to "donate" money for premium items etc..

Ya, online game players will not be disappointed if they have to pay some bucks for extra features or items. A friend of mine used to run a fantasy browser game, and even with small traffic somebody had already bought premium membership. This is the best option, imho, especially if you have a large user base.

You could also try the CPA thing, as it may perform well, but I don't really know how much you would putting it online only once in a month.

As dumb as it may seem - but I also aggree with a Pay-System for Items...
...people seem to want to pay for stuff - I don`t know if it makes them feel better or they like the thought that they got stuff others don`t have because they don`t wann spend money on a free game.

    Stick to Premium-Content via Payment...

What type of MMORPG are you talking about? Actual games or html/css games?

Phone Payments for Premium Items, it's the BEST way to monetize IMHO, why?
Because, most of your users will be teenagers and they don't have CC or money to spend, but they do have a phone;)
Also advertising is another good option!

P.S. What happened to your past project and 300k user base?
