Hello all, I just discovered this site the other day and I am overwhelmed by all the great info here lol (i've lost hours already reading). I'm not asking anyone to do work for me but I'm curious about something. I have a MMA blog I've been running for a few years now (off and on) and was reading that people can make money off blogging with adsense and stuff...I have a wordpress blog but it's a free hosted one so I don't have hosting and I believe with the free self hosted one your limited with plug-ins and themes. I'm going to keep digesting posts in this section but was wondering if I wanted to try and make money with my blog I would probably have to start fresh and get the other wordpress so I can use the plug-ins meant for money making right? I'd hate to start over but I'll do it lol. I appreciate anyone's help or 2 cents and I appreciate your time. Thank you.

I am a MMA fan but not like I used to be wrestled did Jiu Jitsu for a few years etc... Yes you can make money, amazon affiliate or become a dropshipper of gear. Most important thing is content. On the wrestling blog I USED to maintain I would discuss results etc and find my self ranking for the fighters name or fighter vs fighter result etc...

There is a poster here who I think goes by hkrotzee or something like that who is a purple or brown belt in BJJ and runs his instructors website. I will not give out his info but maybe he will chime in or you can reach out to him..

If I can help you in anyway let me know. The key thing will be to write lots of contnet and stay current, the earlier you are the one to post about fights the faster you will get traffic. Lots of mma blogs need content so maybe you can guest post. Join a forum like sherdog and post in the technique forums like the grappling, srtiking, fitness forums and see if there are bloggers on there will take a guest post from you in exchange for a link back to your site.

Finally YES I would go ahead and buy hosting and start a wordpress based blog.

I really appreciate your time and prompt reply. I was a member on sherdog for several years haven't touched my account in ages ha! Also I will admit I am not a content writer and I hate it so I was going to other MMA Blogs and copying and pasting...I never took credit and would put in bold font where the source came from. Would I have to start writing?

As soon as you start trying to make money with the free hosted wordpress blog, your site will be taken down

It should be pretty easy to copy and paste the existing free blog's info to a new self-hosted blog

I think there's a way to go "paid" when you want your own self-hosted wordpress, and you're on the "free" version - never gone "free" so not sure how it's done

Well dup content can still rank so you can be more of a "MMA news site" as long as you provide credits to the author and a link. BUT in my experience it is better to have content you have written yourself.

If you ever decide to outsource content let me know, I have a 17yr old son that is a wrestler, huge MMA fan and a big pro wrasslin fan too. He can write and he needs to start working, LOL!!

I have been on the sherdog forum since 03, lol...

OK so for now just to get started I would be good with starting the blog then transferring all my old posts from the free one to my new blog? I have like 350 posts with tons of tags and such..then for future I can copy paste with source links and credits? I would love to have some writers but I currently have no finances to hire writers. Hopefully if this pans out I can do that though.

Free download program HTTrack will copy your free wordpress site to your hard drive - you can then re-use content easily

Oh wow your a life saver. I was just moaning and groaning about how long all the copying and pasting and transferring photos lmao..my head was ready to explode. I'm downloading my old blog now!

I think it would work, just like the comments above. You should be updated about the fight, and give out some freebie moves or a tutorial on how to use BJJ. Good luck!

Well the blog is more of a "News" and media (pics of latest events, fights etc) I'm def open to that idea though

If you are the 1st on it though you will rank. Like I said I had a wrestling blog but I posted the results of the king mo vs roger gracie fight right after it happened and I was getting traffic for king mo, roger gracie as well as king mo vs roger gracie.

If you are 1st on the scene you have a huge advantage and also get the opportunity to get loyal readers and maybe even go viral.

Yea I hear ya, when i was updating my old blog everyday i was getting ridiculous traffic from google searches.

Go for it!

It's something that you love right? You should go for it. I went with an NBA blog because I love the NBA, and what I can tell you is that I'm very happy with my decision. :)

Worry about the money later on, just build it up. In a few months, you will be able to reap the rewards. Just make sure that you have great content. Articles, reviews, videos, pics... Be creative! Make sure that your blog offers something different. Something the other MMA blogs don't have. :)

Yea I do love MMA. I'm always watching old UFC's and I never miss an event outside of UFC I love all organizations! I got my old blog still downloading its big lol...I gotta run to school I'll be back in 3 hours

As Getwhatchuwant said, you can monetize by dropshipping gear (there is huge demand for MMA gear atm), nutrional supplements, affiliate marketing. If you're any good you could create training videos and eBooks. That's what I'm doing for Muay Thai (I teach and fight pro Muay Thai). It's a decent niche to get into because it's become so mainstream over the last 5 years.

well as i stated previously I'm a "news" content person..I've never done e-books nor have I taught or instructed anyone in any aspect of Martial Arts. I don't know what dropshipping means (im assuming wholesale?) but I would imagine that would take a nice chunk of money to start which I don't have because I use the little money I do have to run my eBay hat store (just started). I would love to do it though lol

No drop shipping is where the wholesaler stocks the product and you order the product and have it sent to the customer, The customer pays you upfront online and then you pay the wholesaler who charges you, the difference between what it cost the customer to order and ship vs what the wholesaler charges you is your profit.

Also there are affiliate products for training videos and gear and books. The possibilities are endless

whoa thats a whole new realm for me i have no clue about how to do any of that hahahaha...guess ill start with getting the new blog going

MMA is a niche I have been wanting to go after. I am new to blogging but I am a HUGE mma fan. I wrestled 15 years and I have trained MMA but now that I have a family it's not feasable chasing such dreams lol. Either way I think an MMA blog can make lots of money. The key is getting a lot of forum memberships. I know of a few MMA site that have terrible blog posts but they thrive purely because they have forum membership.

I have a bunch of good ideas for this niche but have always been hesitant for some reason. Ever want someone to write up a post for you PM me
