Missing backlinks?

Hiya this is probably a stupid question but it's got me scraching my head. my site should have well over 50 do follow backlinks and some don't follow links but when I cheek the site on ahrefs it only shows that I have 1 backlink and that it's a don't follow. Now I know I'm probably doing something wrong or have missed something but I thought back links would show up within a few days. Does anyone know why there not showing and again I apologize if it's a stupid question but it's really got me baffled. And I apologize again if this is a stupid question but can't find anything about it searching the site so had to ask
