Minimum number of keywords instances

Is it true that it is no longer important how many times you use a keyword? Previously I used 1-2% keyword density, but recently I've had a few people tell me that readability is way more important, and you shouldn't sacrifice this even if you only end up with only a few instances of the main keyword in a text. Is this correct?

it isn't as important as it used to be, but until the on-page SEO tools (RankMath, Frase, SurferSEO, Neuron Writer, Yoast, etc) remove this requirement from their optimization suggestions you should still use the keyword a few times throughout the content. At least use it as the title of the 1st image, and as the ALT tag of the 1st image. And you can use it in the title of your content, too if it makes sense and you think will create good CTR.

For now, Google doesn't penalize pages for using the main keyword inside of the content, so it's safe to use it. And 1-2% means nothing, you can keep doing it...

Readability is always important, how long visitors stay on your page decides the bounce rate. Rather than main keywords, you can also add secondary and LSI ones, it can bring you more traffic when ranked.

What you said is true obviously, as User experience plays a vital role to have your bounce rate.
Like attractive themes and designs of website, readability is must when it come to content.
You can use related keywords or minimal usage of usage of kw is enough, when it delivers the heart of the content
