My recent analytics suggest 500-2000 visible words formatted properly in sentences and paragraphs. Link text does not count toward the hypothetical "main content block" of a page factor. This factor suggests that google looks for the largest or perhaps first article like structure on the page and gives that text the most credibility. The numbers have also suggested that there is a sweet spot on page size. You want to be big enough to have some meat to your content but not so big as to be too much for a human to digest in a reasonable amount of time.
Take this with a grain of salt. I have also noticed that the domain and range of these qualities changes from one keyword niche to another which may reflect correlation instead of causation.
