Hu folks been doing a few beginner experiments on a throwaway site to learn BH SEO. Timeline in short: Week 1 = small ranking gains, Week 3 = sudden drop for a few target pages. I’m not an expert and don’t want to make the same mistakes again.

What I’ve done so far (high level): small campaign, tracked rankings and traffic, not a live business site.
What I’m confused about: is this likely just volatility, or something I should worry about (penalty, bad links, indexing issues)?
If you were me, what basic checks would you run first? (I can share screenshots of GSC/traffic/ranks if needed anonymized.) Appreciate any beginner-friendly tips or diagnostics.

Hey, nice that you’re testing on a throwaway instead of a real project. That already puts you ahead. Sudden drops in Week 2 to Week 4 are super common, especially with fresh pages and new links. Google often re-evaluates early signals, so some bounce is normal. It doesn’t automatically mean penalty.

Here are some quick beginner checks I’d run first:

  1. Check indexing - Look in GSC if the dropped pages are still indexed and not showing crawl or coverage issues.
  2. Review the link sources - If you built links, look at them for patterns like too many exact-match anchors or very obvious low-quality footprints. Small campaigns can still trigger re-evaluation if the pattern is sharp.
  3. Content quality + uniqueness - Make sure the pages actually have something valuable or unique. Even small improvements help Google trust them.
  4. Check if competitors moved - Sometimes your drop is really just someone else jumping up.

If everything looks fine, it could just be early-stage volatility. New sites rarely sit still in rankings.
