For users of MS Word and Office, expect changes in the program coming up soon. Microsoft was sued and lost. I know a lot of people hate Microsoft so this is your chance to rub it in.

Court Bans Sale of Microsoft Word

    AP

A federal appeals court ordered Microsoft to stop selling its Word program in January and pay a Canadian software company $290 million for violating a patent, upholding the judgment of a lower court.

SEATTLE ? A federal appeals court ordered Microsoft to stop selling its Word program in January and pay a Canadian software company $290 million for violating a patent, upholding the judgment of a lower court.

But people looking to buy Word or Microsoft's Office package in the U.S. won't have to go without the software. Microsoft said Tuesday it expects that new versions of the product, with the computer code in question removed, will be ready for sale when the injunction begins on Jan. 11.

Toronto-based i4i Inc. sued Microsoft in 2007, saying it owned the technology behind a tool in the popular word processing program. The technology in question gives Word users an improved way to edit XML, or code that tells the program how to interpret and display a document's contents.

A Texas jury found that Microsoft Word willfully infringed on the patent. Microsoft appealed that decision, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Tuesday upheld the lower court's damage award and the injunction against future sales of infringing copies of Word.

Michel Vulpe, founder and co-inventor of i4i, said in a statement that the company is pleased with the decision, calling it "an important step in protecting the property rights of small inventors."

Microsoft said it has been preparing for such a judgment since August. Copies of Word and Office sold before Jan. 11 aren't affected by the court's decision. And Microsoft said it has "put the wheels in motion to remove this little-used feature" from versions of Word 2007 and Office 2007 that would be sold after that date.

"Beta" or test versions of Word 2010 and Office 2010, expected to be finalized next year, do not contain the offending code, the software maker said.

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft said it may appeal further, asking for either a rehearing in front of the appeals court's full panel of judges or in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.

What I would like to see is Microsoft disappear so all the people that hate on them can see how
shitty life would be without them. Microsoft, though the giant they are, have really helped
shape the computer world as it is today and have brought many products that make it easy
for small time developers to put something useful out on the market.

Too bad microsoft hasn't done shit but copy little companies/software. Its aero and shit is just another mshit copy of mac/compiz. Microsoft can go die for all i care.

They implemented uac just like sudo on linux.

Many other things were copied from mac/linux, I am surprised that apple hasn't sued them yet for all the shit.

Microsoft several years ago bought shares of Apple in order to avoid an "anti trust" lawsuit. This is nothing new for Microsoft. They bought and copied (improved) their way in the beginning

    This = The Truth.

Why does no one use google docs when there is word? Because google docs is not a quarter of the app word is.

Just the other day i was ripping an entire database into an excel spreadsheet. And excel did it all for me without the use of a gazillion macros.

.net/C#/ASP/(I guess VB.net aswell), are really allowing smalltime developers like myself to get out there in the world and start developing real world apps that are actually useful. Rip at it all you want for copying or whatever other BS you want, but microsoft supports it.

Seriously after using MS-SQL i cannot believe so many people still seem to be in love with mysql. Its just such an inferior product. Sure they are essentially using the same thing (SQL, Although Transact SQL is slightly diff but same concept). The fact microsoft sits there pumping millions of dollars into it, spending years in the R&D department. Thats what makes these products good.

There is OpenOffice. Considering the pricing difference, it wins hands down against MS Office.

From an Internet Development point of view, you can't do any shit with MS sql aside gaming servers; any kind of serious, widespread, free (and often non-free) CMS platform you can find supports MySql or at most PostGres, never MS Sql. Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, Typo3, Phpfusion, MediaWiki, PhpBb etc (and I think virtually all major Forum products available out there) don't bother with Ms Sql nor with Oracle. So for making interactive sites, MySql is the way to go.

    LAMP

    Linux
    Apache
    MySql
    Php

OpenOffice still just doesnt cut it for me. It may be fine for the average user, but for people who need it for high end business. It just isnt good enough.

Honest to god, if any goverment agency, bank, financial institution was running on MySQL, i would be very very very worried.

It is only from an amateur web designer point of view that people use MySQL, for the obvious price difference aka free. But that has absolutely no bearing on how good the products are. MsSQL (and i guess oracle), are light years beyong mysql. The only thing is, is that mysql is free thus its easy for people to just slap it onto the backend of wordpress or another CMS.

It only makes sense that Microsoft would steal an idea. If you remember Bill Gates actually stole the idea that has made him billions. I think it all started in a garage...

Another ignorant comment from another ignorant winblows user.

Windows User: "Oh here, let me download and click an exe file"

Mac User: "Hmm let me google a little bit and find out how the program works and if it is right for my computer"

Linux user: "Let me get the tar, extract it, modify it to my needs and compile it"

If you think mac is made for the average idiots, then ms is made for 5 year old retards.

    Also:

That is a chart of precentage of computer infections, broken down in OS. Don't see mac or linux up there.

    The truth:

No matter what you all say, I use Word and Excel quite often and I love both. I also use other programs in the Office Suite.

On that note, MS Office is used by thousands, maybe millions of business in the US and abroad. It's tied into a lot of businesses and homes.

Luckily MS will continue to support current versions until they develope a different version that isn't copy infringment.

Well those millions of business are full of idiotic tech personal. You know how much a company could save to replace ms office with openoffice?

Lets say the business has 100 workers, and they got a discount for ms office since it was bulk. Lets say they only had to pay 50 dollars per computer (about 30-50% discount). That means they just spent 5k just on that one product, when they could of saved that.

oh and openoffice is like 100x better and has a lot more things on it.

Digitalage, let me ask you this. If you're an internet marketer why are you here on BlackHatWorld, rather than say a Neopets forum? The answer is because there is a greater number of people here to interact with that have the information you are looking for. The real reason why PC's have more virus' and such is because the market share is HUGE, and programmers would simply be wasting their time on any other OS'. It would be like you asking about autoblogs on that Neopets forum.

Mac's are meant for the casual user, that's a widely known fact, and who really cares, to each their own. But the fact is you shouldn't make claims like that unless you know what you are talking about.

Oh and if you wanna play the picture game here is one for you. :)

Please list the 100's of features that open office has over MS Office. Openoffice only exists because it is free. If openoffice and msoffice cost the same (Hell if openoffice cost ANYTHING > $0), then people wouldnt use it. There is absolutely no comparison for features, only price.

As for viruses. That would likely be because of the marketshare. Dunno why you would make a virus to work on the minority.... Would be like me coding something in C#, which would require .net 3.5 straight off the bat, and then ontop of that using a library which is only included in windows xp. It cuts down your options straight away, which is why it doesnt happen. Not because mac users are smart.

Its funny because you use this image here :

Implying that a mac is easy to use. And yet you also state that mac users are the most tech savy of the bunch and they "Google whatever they are downloading". Then why make the mac such a piss poor OS for complete idiots?

Wait Mac is stealing from Microsoft? Didn't they both steal the basis of their operating systems from xerox back in the day?

Besides its hard to back Apple with Steve Jobs, dude is an A-Hole. I mean how do you get mad at Bill Gates for stealing the operating system when Jobs did the same thing just a month later. He's like the guy who goes to rob a bank and gets mad at Bill Gates because he already did.
