Microsoft's move to boost Bing's social networking feaures could finally give it an opportunity to truly take on Google's dominant search engine, analysts say.

The updated Bing search engine, unveiled on Thursday, can now include the user comments, likes and activities posted in popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, agreed with Microsoft's contention that the redesign is "the most significant since Microsoft launched Bing three years ago."

"The Bing redesign really is a search revolution and the biggest change I have seen from them in years," Moorhead said.

"Bing could revolutionize social search by tapping into Facebook's and Twitter's capabilities. Unlike Google, Bing and Microsoft aren't vying to create their own social media destination, so they can access the best-of-breed social media sites like Facebook and Twitter," Moorhead added.

I could understand if they used LinkedIn to give professional opinion on search results, but Facebook? I dont want to see any Facebook dude commenting on my search results, nor do i want them to see what porn niches I prefer when searching.

Look at it from the profit angle, were here to make money not joke about personal use, you can paint the first page of a given niche with your affiliate links from various social platforms, especially twitter and facebook with their social optimization results. Think about how you could over-influence the search results of a given niche with your aff links through social comments, blog posts, etc. That could equal to more reach and profits for your IM efforts. This is huge as I stated.

When will Google and Microsoft realize that they will always fail in social. It's not because of their code or design, it's because Google and Microsoft aren't fucking cool. Social brands need to be hip and trendy.

No one wants a profile page with a computer software and search engine company.

I wonder if Apple would be able to successfully create a social network then. Lots of people think they're trendy and hip.

Why is Moorhead writing like he's unaware that MSFT owns a stake in FB?

I don't think that it is as huge a news as it is being considered. Google is still far ahead of Bing.

It's also that people don't want profile pages for big existing companies that do other things besides social. It just feels like your advertising for their products, like having a profile on nike.com.
