Microsite best method?

So I've been lurking around here for a while and have picked up a thing or two. I've decided to make my first microsite on my own but needed some advise on a few things. FYI my microsite will be targeting a small geographical area. My questions are below:

1. I will definitely have custom content however is it important for there to be a lot of content on the home page other than a welcome message?
2. Should I worry about aggressive link building with a microsite?
3. In a small market is there any other tips to rank higher in google sooner?
   
4. Lastly, I know content is king but is it possible for a 5 page site to outranks, say a 30 page site in the same market?

1. I suggest you have atleast 1500-2000 words on your homepage.
2. First update the content for your primary and secondary keywords. Learn about silos its basically interlinking your posts within the site. If you get all these right then half the job is done here.
3. Wait and see after doing the above steps. If your keywords are of low competition then you would be having a good rank in serps. Next step will be to start sending links to your site. Start by sending some social signals, profile links, social bookmarks, article submisions. Then send power links like blog comments on high tf/cf with low obl, expired web 2s, and at last if needed the pbn to boost the ranking further onto page 1.
4. Yes it is definitely possible with good content and good link building strategy.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply @tejas123. Do you have a specific set of tools that you use to track your progress or just manually check on google periodically?

1) homepage should have atlas 2K words.

2) Yes you should, unless you've given it at least 6-8 month, during which period you should concentrate on building ON-PAGE seo, and high DA off-page links.

3) Target long tails and get content written on your subpages targeting each of them.

4) On certain cases and niches yes, but authority sites mostly tend to rank higher.
